(Bob) Forney, a pioneer of Paradise Valley, had taken his life to escape the terrible pain and suffering of a disease from which he could not obtain relief. At the saddest funeral gathering ever known in the valley, Rev. N.M. Temple, past of the Livingston M.E. church preached a touching funeral sermon at the Forney home before a large gathering of relatives and friends of Bob Forney, who was beloved of all who knew him with a love and respect begotten by a long time spend in Paradise Valley thru the struggles of pioneer days to the day when the valley has been built into a home and paradise where the blood of the pioneers has handed down the noblest and best of the traditions of the rugged days of the primitive west. Bob Forney was carried on his last journey by tender, loving hands to the Shorthill burying ground where he joined many of his peers of the early 80's in an everlasting companionship to listen to the eternal music of the Yellowstone and the whispering of the pines 'neath a canopy walled in by the magnificent hills which they helped to tame from the wilderness and mold into boundaries for Paradise Valley. Just as Bob Forney and his brothers are pioneers in Montana, so is the Forney family one of the pioneer families of America. The Farni family came from France in the early colonial days and settled in what is now Pennsylvania. When William Penn received his grant of land from the British crown he deeded it to his colonists in the state which bears his name. In making the deed, the name Farni was inadvertently changed to Forney, which is the name this branch of the family has born since. Another branch of the family, the Fahrneys, have come down to the present day, and its members are prominent in medical circles. When Bob Forney was small his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Forney, migrated from Pennsylvania to the west and settled near Maquoketa, Iowa in 1856 before that state had a railroad. After Bob had grown to manhood and had pushed on farther west he came to Paradise valley from Portland on the first thru train, the Northern Pacific ran east. Park County was then a part of Gallatin county. A brother of Mr. Forney had preceded him and had located in the valley several miles from Livingston. The parents, Mr. & Mrs. J.K. Forney, came here in 1887 and remained for over a year. They returned in 1891 and made their home. Mrs. Forney died in 1905 and J.K. Forney died in 1910. Both are buried in the Shorthill cemetery. Bob Forney until two years ago was a rugged, health and active man, when he became afflicted with gall stones. Physicians would not operate on account of his age. The malady gained a stronger hold upon him and at times the pain was almost unbearable. It was this sufferi8ng which caused him to take his life Saturday by severing the Jugular vein. He had eaten a hearty breakfast and completed some chores about the ranch home. After talking with members of his family he was found in a few minutes in the barn in a dying condition. He was 74 years of age at the time of his death. Bob Forney during the years from 1883 to 1924 had been of the leading citizens of Paradise valley. He had prospered and he leaves two unencumbered ranches to his wife and children. As he had prospered financially, he was wealthy in friends and the esteem of those with whom he had acquaintance. Bob Forney leaves his wife and five children. A son, Monte, resides in Butte. Two other sons, Clay and Cleo reside on the ranch about 14 miles south of Livingston. A daughter, Fern, resides and another daughter, Mrs. Ruby Jordan, also resides in the Pine creek community. Three brothers, Abraham H. W. H. and Samuel Forney, also reside in the Pine creek Community and with Bob settled here in the early days. Another brother, John Forney, resides at Toledo, Iowa. A sister, Mrs. M.E. Kauffman, with her husband was en route to San Diego, Calif., at Mr. Forney's death they were not located in time to return for the funeral. Mrs. Kauffman's daughter, Mrs. Pearl Armstrong, who resides in the upper valley was present at the funeral. The sorrow of the bereaved relatives is the sorrow of the entire community. Bob Forney has passed on, but his spirit, with those of other pioneers who helped to build Paradise valley will mark on thru time in the hills and the valley which they called home.
