It is a lesson as learned at school, "The vicinity was better by the coming of Mr. Knight." He farmed for a living. He preached for the United Brethren because he was called to do so. More than that, he loved to fish, made long, over-night trips to his favorite places. It has been handed down, he was the best of fishermen. It was not much money he could get from his ministering on the frontier. But was something which needed to be done, and he could. In middle life, he served as an itinerant preacher to many far distant points. The one he served most, was that of what was known as the "Log Church," at that time on the grounds where now is the Pleasant Plains Cemetery. His wife, a daughter, Mrs. Jonas Hartman and her husband are buried there with him on the same lot. His passing was tragic, unforeseen. In the field, threshing with a crew, another man's team was running away. Rev. Knight was in line with them. His thought was to stop them. Running close to, if not in front of them, he attempted stopping the runaway team. He may have slipped, or the team may have swerved. Any way, the end of the wagon tongue struck him in the stomach. It would have been merciful, could it have killed him instantly. But that was not to be. Knight lingered, between life and death, several days, and finally, his brave, noble life came to an end. There was a large family left, one being born some time after the passing of Mr. Knight. The wife and mother was left in a terrible plight. The one person, a life saver to the preacher's widow, was Joe Housel. It was Housel's team which killed him. Housel always felt to blame but of course, he was not. He was always doing something good for her, giving money, carrying a subscription paper. Housel never got over the remorse.
