McClelland, Adams County lost a pioneer citizen and a gifted Christian gentleman, who spent 76 years in the locality which knew him as farmer, teacher, and preacher, who was God-fearing, kindly, and public spirited. Rev. McClelland has been failing rapidly for the past few years, but until his very recent illness was able to come down town and to visit with his friends. It is difficult to express the general regret and sorrow of a community when a man of such sterling qualities and one who has performed such faithful service in a community passes on. While he had not engaged in active ministerial work for some years, he was always ready to fill pulpits and give his service in any way possible. He is held in high esteem by the Presbytery of the state and by congregations which he has served and where he has preached. He and his devoted wife have reared a fine family of children who respect his memory and who love to reflect on the rugged personality of the man who left his children the fine legacy, a life of uprightness, honest, and stability. William Carroll McClelland, youngest child of Paul D. and Elizabeth McClelland was born in a log cabin on the McClelland homestead southwest of Brooks on September 22, 1861 and died June 23, 1938 at his home in Corning, Iowa at the age of 76 years, 9 months, and 2 days. He was united in marriage to Mary A. Schafroth, January 1880, who passed away March 8, 1892. Three children were born to this union, Corrine Kennedy and Roy McClelland of Nodaway, and Robert McClelland of Clarinda. On October 25, 1892 he was married to Mary Ann Walter and the children of this union are: Fred C., Earl, and Albert McClelland of Corning, and Marie McAlpin of Clarinda. He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife; two sisters, Elizabeth and Cynthia McClelland of Nodaway; his seven children; fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild; also many other relatives and friends. His entire life has been spent in Adams County and neighboring vicinities where his life has been spent in service as a farmer, teacher, and preacher. He was ordained to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church September 11, 1886 and at the time of the union of the churches was installed as a member of the Corning Presbyterian Church. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, at 2 p.m. at the Federated Church, Dan W. Turner delivered a short address and was assisted in the services by Rev. Kiser of Creston and Rev. W. H. Guest of Corning. Music was furnished by Mrs. L. R. Taylor and Mrs. Ned Turner who sang numbers which had been selected by Rev. McClelland. Mrs. Magnusson presided at the organ. The body was taken to the Methodist Grove Cemetery and at Methodist Grove Church which was the home church of McClelland family, the procession stopped for a moment while Rev. Kiser spoke a word of tribute. The deacons of the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg, Rev. McClelland's last charge, acted as pall bearers. Adams County Free Press, June 30, 1938, page 2
