For twenty five years he was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Auburn and for a time was editor of the denomination's Assembly Herald. For the last two years of his life he was secretary of the executive commission of the Presbyterian Church of the United States. He died on January 31, 1913 at the age of 62. At the request of the Amherst Alumni Association, the Rev. W.H. Hubbard wrote of himself in 1912: "After graduating from Amherst in 1871, I tried to get a position as teacher. My mother desired that I should prepare for the ministry, so a sort of compromise was made; that if I failed to obtain a position before fall, I would enter seminary. It was only the week before it opened that I had the opportunity of having my application considered with others in connection with the principalship of a high school near Boston, but nothing resulting, I took my first year of theological instruction at Andover and the remaining two years at Princeton, where I graduated in the class of 1874. Following the true impulsive bent of my nature I accepted the first pulpit that was offered me, and went to Rutland, Massachusetts, where I was engaged for twenty-three dollars a week so long as the money held out. Here I remained for something over a year when receiving notification one Saturday to become instructor of mathematics for a term at Amherst — the Professor having been granted a leave of absense for the time. I resigned my pastorate the following Sunday, and on Monday night I appeared in Amherst. But between the Saturday letter and the Monday arrival, the faculty had changed their plans, and the mathematics I had been asked to teach the sophomores had been thrown over to the spring term and the classes given extra Greek. When the President notified me of this change he suggested that it would make no difference with me, as I could return to my work in Rutland. 'True,' I replied, 'but as I indicated my willingness to leave the church it would be an embarrassment to go back.' Among the cherished memories of that first parish, where the farmers drove for miles around to the white meeting house on the hill, I hold a Bible, the money for which was given to me by a most intemperate close-fisted man, whose life touched closely mine and who asked me to preach a sermon on 'Practical Economy.' Leaving Rutland it was only a short time before I was called to the Congregational Church at Merrimac, MA [1876-1883]. Here my mother kept house for me, my father having recently died, and my brother [Edward] of fourteen lived with us as he prepared for college. My gold watch and chain and my diamond pin are among the loving remembrances of those earnest seven and one half years of labor, after which I was called to the South Congregational Church, Concord, NH. Here my work greatly prospered, until I took an active interest in the temperance cause, and in favor of law inforcement, which had considerable to do with New Hampshire going Democratic and Cleveland elected President. The practical results of the temperance agitation in Concord and vicinity made it expedient for me to find a new field of work. It immediately opened at Holyoke, MA [1885] where I remained for one year in connection with the Second Congregational Church. Durng this year, 140 were received into the membership of the church, and best of all, there I found in the parish the one who became my wife — Miss Elizabeth Allen Skinner. So that I have always attributed a great deal of the success which has attended me during these years to my active interest in the temperance cause, for without the temperance agitation, no Holyoke, and without Holyoke, no Miss Skinner to become my wife. It was her desire that we should begin our married life in a new field of labor. Consequently, some twenty-six years ago I came to Auburn as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. The years quickly passed. My work has been greatly blessed, so that I received something like 800 into the membership of the church and have been instrumental in raising for its equipment in all of its departments something like $135,000. --------------------- Following his death, the Rev. William H. Hubbard was originally buried in the Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn, NY, next to his mother, Anna Hinds Hubbard. In May 1927, following the death of his wife in Holyoke, his remains were removed from Auburn and reburied here. The Hubbard Monument in Fort Hill Cemetery is identical to that subsequently erected here.
