He had been suffering from a long spell of sickness, which kept him confined to his room and his bed for over two years. Our friend and brother leaves as a solace in the shadow of gloom which has fallen upon the large area in which he was so well known, so highly regarded and loved and will be so long remembered - an unblemished name, a spotless character, and will be long and very tenderly known as "Bobby Sutton." Born of a noble ancestry, his parents were Robert A. Sutton, Co. H, 26th Va. Rgt., and Rosa B. Farinholt. The subject of this sketch was born Oct. 10th, 1854, and thus entered into life in a period that just antedated the War between the States. He was married to Miss Lucy C. Roane Dec. 16th, 1877, thus this lovely union lasting 53 years and some several weeks. From this union there survives their honored father, his sons, Messrs R. A. Sutton, Jr., J. H. Sutton and W. B. Sutton, of King and Queen, and his daughters, Mrs. R. F. Heywood of Gloucester, Mrs. E. L. Pointer, West Point, Mrs. J. H. Burton, Urbanna, and Mrs. R. T. Bland, West Point. The training these received in the Christian home, the tenderness of a loving mother and father, in the social life they enjoyed, and the noble example thay have to follow must surely take away much that makes it hard to say "Thy will be done." Mr. Sutton was a most affectionate and tender husband and father, a loyal citizen who will be missed sadly, so loyal to the church of which he was a most active member - Shackelford's Chapel - true to it's teachings and always helpful to its pastors, ever ready to do his part. The funeral service was conducted at Shackelford's by the pastor, Rev. Mr. Astin. Assisting in the service were nine ministers and warm friends of the deceased: Rev. F. W. England, a former pastor; William Jones of Saluda, Roland Riddick of Urbanna, Rev. Mr. Laughton of West Point, E. G. Hill of Reidville, Arthur Burton of Richmond, R. A. Folkes and H. L. Corr of Gloucester. There was no pronounced eulogy; none was needed. The large assemblage of loving friends, which filled Shackleford's and the churchyard to overflowing were eulogy enough. The services consisted simply of reading several appropriate selections of scripture, interspersed with music beautifully rendered by the choir and congregation, and prayer by Rev. R. A. Folkes. The active pall bearers: Willard Collins, Clyde Roane, Courtney Roane, Whitney Sutton, Edson Pond, and Elmo Richwood; these bore the pall to the church cemetery. A list of the honorary pall bearers cannot be accurately given.
