OBITUARY: From Harrison County News: "DIED - At the home of his son, Andrew, in Cincinnati Township, Harrison County, Iowa, Monday, March 24th, 1902, Robert Landels Coulthard, aged 90 years. Mr. Coulthard was born in Dumfreyshire, Scotland, in 1812. He was the youngest of a family of ten children and the last of them all to leave this earth. His father was George Coulthard, a famer, a Scottish Covenanter.... In 1824 George Coulthard brought his family to Canada, settling in New Brunswick, near St. John, where he lived for twelve years, removing in 1835 to Middlesex County, Upper Canada, near London, where the family lived and prospered for many years. There, in 1841, Robert Coulthard married Miss Jane Eddie.... In their Canadian home all their children were born, as follows: Mrs. George Richardson, George, William, David, James, John, Robert, Andrew and Hugh, all living in this vicinity with families of their own, save Robert, who is in the farther West. "In 1859 Robert, the sire, having heard of the wonders of the United States as a land of rich promise to the farmer, came out, looked over this garden valley of the world, returned and reported it like the land of Canaan, flowing with milk and honey. Then in 1861 his son, George, and his son-in-law George Richardson, came out and located in Cincinnati Township, Harrison County, where they have since lived and prospered and reared large and useful families. In 1863 William came; again in 1867 James came, and in 1869 came David. Then in 1877 Robert, with the remaining members of his household, came out and settled among his prosperous sons, and here he has since lived and here he died full of years and ripened by the experiences of life like the patriarchs of old...." HARRISON COUNTY, IA HISTORY: Excerpts from an Harrison Co, IA, historical book: Robert and Jane Coulthard "brought with them a family of eight sons and one daughter, Anna, born Jan. 29, 1841, the wife of George Richardon who has many descendants in this and adjoining townships. The sons were George, born Aug. 16, 1842, who came here in 1859; William, born Aug. 19, 1844; David, born April 16, 1846; James, born July 4, 1848 of Sheridan, Wyoming, the only one now living; John A., born May 8, 1851; Robert L., born Sept. 4, 1856, who died single and spent most of his life in Colorado as a wheelwright; Andrew, born Sept. 29, 1858, and Hugh R. the youngest. The other brothers spent most of their active life in this township." FAMILY HISTORY: From "The Story of the Coulthard Family" by granddaughter Annie Coulthard Downey March 15, 1948: "This is the story of the Coulthard family as it was told to me by my parents - going back to Dumfriesshire Scotland, where my grandfather Robert Landels Coulthard was born Aug. 15th 1812. His father, mother and family of three sons and four daughters immigrated to New Brunswick, Dominion of Canada in 1824, leaving one son and one daughter in Scotland. My grandfather was 12 yrs old when they left Scotland. It took three weeks to cross the Atlantic ocean in a sailing vessel. The family was farmers, they lived in New Brunswick, until 1836 when they moved to the Province of Ontario, Middlesex Co. Township of Mosie.... Robert, my grandfather, married Jane Eddie in 1839 and settled on a farm in Mosie Township [Middlesex Co, Ontario, Canada] on the banks of the Thames river - near London. The land had to be cleared of timber, oak, maple, etc. The sugar maple was left, as sugar was made from the sap drawn from the trees in early spring. This was called sugaring off. The Coulthards were Scotch Presbyterians, followers of John Knox, my grandfather always said. Their 10 children were all born on this farm, Ann 1840, Geo 1842, Wm 1844, Elizabeth died in infancy, David, James, John, Robert, Andrew and Hugh. All grew to manhood here. . . They worked hard to clothe and educate this family this family of 10 in the common schools. They always went to church as they were a dedicated family. . . As in all new countries neighbors worked together to build their houses and even their farm work. The oxen were used as horse power before horses were raised. . . My story now takes me to the close of the Civil War - 1865. Back in Canada, the Coulthard family was growing up, the country in Ontario was becoming thickly settled so Grandfather (Robert Landles) decided to visit his relatives, the House family, in Harrison Co. Iowa, and his old friend Samuel Underwood who had come out from Scotland and settled near Council Bluffs, Ia.; the town of Underwood, Iowa, was eventually named for him. Grandfather went by train to Chicago then to St. Louis, then by steamboat up the Missouri river to Council Bluffs to Underwoods. Mr. Underwood brought him by team to Uncle Allen House's west of Missouri Valley Iowa in Cincinnati Twp. Then he bought three 80-acre tracts from the government. He liked what he saw in Iowa, as it was very productive; he went back to Canada and brought his family here, eventually. . . In the Spring of 1876, Grandfather Coulthard had a sale in Canada, sold the old home to Mr. Chas Ferris, an uncle of Aunt Rebecca's. In the meantime, Uncle John had married Agnes Karr. Grandfather Coulthard and Grandmother and two sons, and Uncle John and Aunt Agnes and 3 month old son Wm all came together. In May, 1876, he, Grandfather, bought a farm from Mr Bowman, crop and all and moved on it in July of 1876. They had a whole railroad car of furniture and farm material, and the family all helped to move it from Missouri Valley out to the farm. This was quite an undertaking for Grandfather and Grandmother Coulthard as they weren't too young at the time. By this time the Coulthard family was all together in Iowa, and their old friends the Eddies and Houses were all so glad to have them here - I remember hearing my father telling about all visiting together - and the good times they had."
