Illinois, to 3575 West Bertrand Road, in Bertrand Township, South of Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, not long after his parents purchased the farm there in 1919. Russell was 3 and 1/2 years of age (almost 4), when they purchased the farm near Buchanan, MI. ----------------------------------- Note: The 1920 census shows Russell's parents and children still living in Naperville, Illinois. Perhaps his father let the renters stay on the farm near Buchanan, until Alois could move his family to Michigan. ------------------------------ Russell grew up on his parents farm located at 3575 West Bertrand Road, South of Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan (kiddy-corner from the Kansas elementary school). ------------------------------------ An article published in the Benton Harbor, MI "News-Palladium" newspaper, on Fri. June 12, 1931, page 7, states: "415 Rural Students Get 8th Grade Diplomas Today". 8th grade graduation held at St. Joseph High School audtorium. (Russell Letcher is listed among the students from Bertrand Township). -------------------------------------- Russell attended the Buchanan High School. (See photo of Russell in the 1935 yearbook). ---------------------------------- Russell served in the U.S. Navy, during World War II. He served on the U.S.S. Dixie. ------------------------------------ Russell ("almost" 24), was married on Oct. 7, 1939, in Niles, Berrien County Michigan, to Margaret Marie Wickler (1916-2011), the daughter of Henry John Wickler and his wife Lena (Liedy) Wickler. (Surname spelled as "Liedy" on the headstones of Lena's parents Valentine and Katherine Liedy). --- Note: Margaret's parents, Henry John Wickler (1882-1949), and Lena (Liedy) Wickler (1883-1963), are buried in the Silverbrook Cemetery, in Niles, Berrien County Michigan. -------------------------------- [Henry Wickler and his wife Lena Liedy also had a son Lawrence Wickler, who was born and died (stillborn), on Dec. 17, 1920, and is buried in the Long Lake Cemetery, Berrien Co. MI]. ------------------------------ Russell and Margaret had one son and one daughter. --------------------------------- Russell and his wife and children, lived across the road, and then next door, to his parents, on West Bertrand Road, South of Buchanan, Michigan, near the Kansas elementary school (near the Michigan-Indiana State line). --------------------------------- Russell worked as a sheet metal worker, at the J. C. Lauber Company. -------------------------------------- An article in the Benton Harbor "News-Pallidium" newspaper in Benton Harbor Michigan on Sat., Oct. 12, 1957, page 16, titled: "New [two-room] School Holds Public Open House". It lists the members of the Kansas elementary school board, including Russell, who is listed as the "moderator". ----------------------------------------- Another article in the same newspaper published on Wed. July 16, 1958, lists Russell as the retiring-president of the school board, for the Kansas grade school. -------------------------------- Russell and his wife Margaret, later moved to South Bend, Indiana, and lived at 903 Woodbine Way, South Bend, IN, and at 2817 Council Oaks Drive, in South Bend, Indiana, and then at 52128 Friars Court, South Bend, IN. ------------------------------- The following obituary for Russell L. Letcher was published in the South Bend Tribune newspaper, in South Bend, Indiana on May 17, 1987, Section B, page 15. ------------ Russell L. Letcher. Russell L. Letcher, 71, of 52128 Friars Court, died at 7 a.m. Saturday at his home. He retired in 1977 as a sheet metal worker for the J. C. Lauber Co. He was born Oct. 29, 1915, in Naperville [Eola], Ill., and lived in the South Bend area most of his life. On Oct. 7, 1939, in Niles, [MI] he married Margaret Wickler, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Sheri Garwood of Niles; a son, Jerry L., of Dumfries, Va.; five grandchildren; and a brother, Paul A. Letcher of Three Rivers, [MI]. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery in Buchanan, [MI]. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Welsheimer North Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. He was a member of the church and a Navy Veteran of World War II. Memorial contributions may be made to the Corpus Christi Building Fund or Hospice of St. Joseph County. ---------------------------------- Russell is buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, next to his wife Margaret, in Section H, Lot 73.
