Mrs. Mayne was 80 years of age and was the first white child born in Iowa. She had been a resident of Council Bluffs since 1875, having been born in Van Buren County, in which place her parents had come from Indiana with one of the first colonies to cross the Mississippi into the then virgin territory. Mayne, the pioneer attorney, died at the family residence 233 Park Avenue Friday evening. Mrs. Mayne was 80 years of age and was the first white child born in Iowa. She had been a resident of Council Bluffs since 1875, having been born in Van Buren County, in which place her parents had come from Indiana with one of the first colonies to cross the Mississippi into the then virgin territory. Mrs. Mayne's death was due to an attack of pneumonia, which she suffered about eight weeks ago. She married W.S. Mayne, May 5, 1864, at Keosauqua, Van Buren County, and lived there with her husband until he decided to establish himself in the practice of law here. With the exception of a year or two at Red Oak, this city has been their residence continuously since 1875. Mrs. Mayne has been active in the social and religious life of the city and was one of the sturdy pioneer characters of Council Bluffs. She helped organize the Woman's Christian Association, which organization was largely instrumental in the founding of the Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mayne is survived by her husband, two sons and two daughters. The sons are Attorney George H. Mayne and J. Harley Mayne, civil engineer, and the daughters are Mrs. W.S. Rigdon of Council Bluffs and Mrs. W.A. Longnecker of Burlington. She also leaves two brothers, Charles Mangum of Omaha and E.C. Mangum of Clearfield, Utah. There are three sisters, Miss Minnie Mangum of this city, Mrs. R.J. Wood of Blood Creek, Alberta, Canada, and Mrs. Calvin Grosvenor of Logan, IA. There are thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The funeral will be held Monday from the residence and will be conducted by Rev. George D. Rissman, pastor of the Broadway Methodist Church of which Mrs. Mayne had been a member all her life in Council Bluffs. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
