A family history says when he came to Coshocton County he had 25 cents in his pocket and a team of old horses. The entire family of boys and girls "laid hold" of an axe, to clear the land. When he was in great need of money he made barrels from a stillhouse in Dresden at 37 1/3 cents each. In this way he was able to pay off his land. Samuel married Susan Whitsel in 1813 and they had nine children before she died in 1837. He then married Mary Chambers; three children were born to them. According to Rhea Knittle, an authority on Ohio silver and pewter, Samuel was one of the few pewter makers in Ohio. He combined his business with his farming and coopering. He also made guns, wagons and farm implements and did blacksmithing. Samuel ended up as a wealthy man, owning more than 1,000 acres in the county. In 1864, during the Civil War when everything was bringing a good price he sold nine head of horses, 500 sheep, many beef cattle and 100 bushels of grain. The name Brillhart was derived from two names before 1500 in Germany. It was the custom, or maybe law, that if a widow remarried she and her children retained their own names and added the new name. So when Johannes Brill of Eichstadt, Germany died and his widow married a man by the name of "Hard", they went by the name "Brill Hard". Years later when the children were attending school in the United States, the name became Brillhard, then gradually was pronounced Brillhart before the family changed the spelling. Other settlers who came to Monroe Township about the same time as the Brillharts were Darious Snow, Jacob Lutz and William Griffith. ... A farmer William married Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel and Susan Brillhart. Other children of Samuel Brillhart continued to live in Monroe Township while some moved to other states. David, like his father, was handy with tools and took up coopering, blacksmithing, and carpentry. Harrison after serving a term during the Civil War turned to farming in Monroe Township, then later in Jefferson Township; and B.F. also took up farming and owned a fine farm near Spring Mountain. Descendants of Samuel Brillhart still live in Coshocton County, but as far as is known, no samples of his pewter remain. One of the earliest pewterers in Ohio, his work is either unmarked and therefore not recognized, or his pieces were no handy that people simply wore them out. Contributor: MVC
