KELTNER, 89, DIED TODAY IN WASHINGTON Member of Pioneer Ankrom Family; One Of Oldest Twins in U.S. Mrs. Sarah Jane Keltner, pioneer Jefferson county resident and believed to be one of the oldest pair of twins living in the United States, passed away at 9:30 o'clock this morning at the home of her son, David A. Keltner, in Washington, Iowa. Mrs. Keltner would have been 90 years old on July 22. Mrs. Keltner was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ankrom, who moved here from Virginia. She was born on the old Ankron (sic) homestead, seven and one-half miles southeast of Fairfield, the place where William Ankrom now makes his home. She was born on July 22, 1843. Until November, 1930 she made her home in Jefferson county, rearing a family of 10 children, five on whom survive her. During her residence in this vicinity, Mrs. Keltner saw Jefferson county in the making. She was able to tell many interesting experiences of her own and her parents in connection with the history of the county, Fairfield, and the state of Iowa. TWIN SISTER Mrs. Mary Coop of Denver, Colo., mother of Frank Coop of Fairfield, in the twin sister of Mrs. Keltner. The two women received widespread mention within the past year when two twins, 86 years old, claimed the honor of being the oldest twins in this country, and this honor was disputed by Mrs. Keltner and Mrs. Coop. Sarah Jane Ankrom was united in marriage with H. B. Keltner of March 9, 1862. Ten children were born to the union, five of whom survive. Surviving also are 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. H. B. Keltner passed away on March 27, 1919, at the age of 79 years. The surviving children are: David A. Keltner of Washington, Frank and Charles of Fairfield, Delmar D. of Ottumwa and Clarence of Davenport. Two of Mrs. Keltner's children met tragic deaths. Mrs. Rose Brown, her husband and two children were killed in a train wreck near Greenmound, Iowa on March 20, 1910. J. W. Keltner (sic. John William Keltner), a son, was killed by an automobile on Hightway 34 just outside of Fairfield on October 2, 1920. Mrs. Mary McKenzie, Mrs. Mattie (sic. a/k/a Martha) Hastings and an infant son, all deceased, were the remaining three children. For the five and a half years preceding her departure from Jefferson county in 1930, Mrs. Keltner made her home with her son, Charles. She afterward lived for a short time with her son Delmar, in Ottumwa, and then went to the home of David in Washington. Although troubled with failing health for the past several years Mrs. Keltner was able to be up and about until several days ago. Funeral services will be held from the Murray Funeral Home probably on Sunday. Arrangements are expected to be completed in time for an announcement in tomorrow's Ledger.
