Cassidy, son of Harry B. Cassidy of Billings, killed in action in southwest Pacific. ENLISTS HERE Sergeant DeVol H. Cassidy, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Cassidy, Prior hotel, who was listed by the army Tuesday as killed in action, enlisted in the local national guard unit in August 1940, going overseas in March 1942. He was graduated from the Billings high school in 1940. Prior to active service, he was employed by a Billings beauty supply company. Cassidy was born Oct. 11, 1922, at Wibaux and moved to Billings with his parents in 1926. The father and mother are the only survivors. (article amended to include mention of this soldier only) THE BILLINGS GAZETTE, BILLINGS, MONTANA, FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 1948, PAGE SIX SERGEANT'S RITES SET FOR JULY 2 DEVOL H. CASSIDY DIED IN NEW GUINEA The body of Sergeant DeVol H. Cassidy, who was killed in action in New Guinea, January 13, 1943, will be brought to Smith's funeral home in Billings July 1 and services will be held the following day. The funeral is to be held at 2 p.m., July 2 in Smith's chapel. Burial will be in Soldiers plot at Mountview cemetery. Sergeant Cassidy, son of Mrs. E. J. Kirchels of Bozeman and Harry B. Cassidy of Wibaux, enlisted in the Montana national guard in July 1940 and went overseas in 1942. He served in company L of the famed 163rd Infantry, Forty-first division, as leader of a machine gun section. The purple heart was awarded to Sergeant Cassidy posthumously. He was born Oct. 11, 1922, in Wibaux, and came to Billings with his parents in 1926. He attended grade schools here and was graduated from Billings high school in June 1940 just before his enlistment. Cassidy, who awas killed in New Guinea on Jan. 13, 1943, will be held in Smith's chapel Friday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Soldiers plot at Mountview cemetery. The body arrived in Billings Thursday, escorted by Staff Sergeant Elden B. Tatton.
