Read More	Coon Rapids Enterprise March 13, 1959 Page 13 Shelby Samuel Bowman, son of Samuel and Sofia Bronner Bowman, was born on the family farm five miles northeast of Coon Rapids on April 5, 1887 and departed this life at Whittier, California, Monday, March 2, 1959 at the age of 71 years and 11 months. His entire early life was spent on the farm his parents purchased and moved onto in the spring of 1880. His father was instrumental in getting his brothers, George, Henry and William to come here from Muscatine and purchase land in the same locality a few years later. On May 5, 1906, Shelby was married at Carroll to Ella Neidermeyer of Jamaica. To this union two children were born. Louise, Mrs. Dillon Johnston, and Velma, Mrs. Myrtle Shaffer, both of Coon Rapids. Shortly after their marriage, they purchased a farm two miles northwest of Coon Rapids where they made their home until the fall of 1919 when the farm was rented, and the family moved to Coon Rapids. Shelby went into partnership that year with his uncle, William, in the purchase of the only meat market in Coon Rapids at that time. A cousin, Clarence, was taken into the partnership a few months later. After William's death in 1936, Shelby and Clarence were partners in the meat and grocery business until the fall of 1937 when the business was sold to Dillon Johnston and Anker Windfeldt. Death came to Shelby's first wife December 13, 1923 at the family home on 5th Avenue where he and his two daughters continued to make their home. On January 2, 1934, he was married to Jennie Slaybaugh Linton. There were no children born to this union. They observed their 25th wedding anniversary on January 2 of this year at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Johnston, just a few days before leaving for California. The couple had spent 20 winters in that state. Shelby's first trip to California was in 1920 when his family and his brother, Clyde, spent the winter months at Orange where his daughters attended school. After selling the meat and grocery business, he occupied his time by looking after the Seyller estate farms, working for Garst and Thomas and tending his own farm which he sold two years ago. On January 11, 1959, Shelby suffered a heart attack at Whittier, California. After spending three weeks in the hospital at Lynnwood and four weeks of total rest, it was thought he was on the road to complete recovery. Monday morning, March 2, he suffered a severe attack which took his life before a doctor could arrive. Shelby was a member of the Methodist Church, the Odd Fellows and was a 40 year member of the Masonic order. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, two stepdaughters, one stepson, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; also one brother, four sisters and many other relatives and friends. The funeral was held at the Methodist Church Saturday, March 7, at 2 under the direction of the Rev. Earl Josten. The casket bearers were members of the Masonic order which attended the services in a body. Relatives and friends from out of town were from Bayard, Guthrie Center, Carroll, Cooper, Jefferson, Sioux City, Boone, White Bear Lake and St. Peter, Minnesota and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Milwaukee relatives arrived at midnight Saturday after being snowbound in Eastern Iowa.
