Peyton Passes Away Monday Morning WAS LONG PROMINENT AS RESIDENT HERE Was Nearing 81st Milestone At Time Of Death. Served In Union Army Throughout Civil War, And Was A Genteman Of Old School. Sidney F. Peyton, a native of Somerset County and for many years a prominent resident of Crisfield, died at his home in Baltimore at 5 o'clock last Monday morning, after being ill about two months. Mr. Peyton was born in Somerset County, near Pocomoke City, on March 14th, 1843, and was a son of Henry F. Peyton. Both of his parents died when he was very small. At the outbreak of the civil war, when Mr, Peyton was about 18 years of age, he enlisted in the Union army and fought throughout the war. He saw service in many of the hardest-fought battles in that memorable conflict between the states, and came out of the war without a wound or scratch. At the close of the war Mr. Peyton resided in Baltimore for awhile then returned to Somerset County, before the city of Crisfield was established, and resided for several years near Marion Station. He moved to Crisfield about 40 years ago and remained in this city for 16 years or more, after which he returned to Baltimore where he had since resided. By occupation Mr. Peyton was a ship carpenter working at his trade in Pocomoke City before coming to Crisfield, and in Baltimore after moving to that city to live. He was a mechanic of rare skill and had helped to build and repair some of the best known vessels in service on Chesapeake Bay. Despite his advancing years, he was hearty, strong and active until about 8 years ago, at which time he was injured by being run down by a truck and a street car in Baltimore, suffering severe scalp wounds and having one leg badly, crushed He recovered entirely from the effects of the accident however, but did not resume active work. Mr. Peyton was truly a gentleman of the old school. A man of high character, the soul of honor, and with a disposition as sweet as a child's, he enjoyed the confidence and respect of all who knew him. Of unfailing courtesy, considerate and kind to all with whom he came in contact, his friends embraced the entire circle of his acquaintanceship. He was a life-long Christian, and was an active member of Mt. Pleasant M. P. church during his residence in Crisfield. And although he had lived in Baltimore for the past twenty-five years, he visited his children in Crisfield at frequent intervals, and always received a cordial reception from his many friends. On January 6th, 1869 Mr. Peyton was married to Miss Susan A. Powell, originally of Bridgevilie, Del., who survives him. He is also survived by following children: William J. Peyton and 0. F. Peyton of Crisfield, Lewis E. Peyton of Baltimore, Albert W. Peyton of Adams, N. Y., Mrs Bessie V. Macleod and Mrs. Bertha Z. Fawcett of Baltimore, an Mrs. Sue V. Lamar of Washington. Thirty-two grand children and one great-grand child, also survives. Mr. Peyton's remains were brought to Crisfield on Wednesday and funeral services were held from Mt. Pleasant church Wednesday afternoon when many friends assembled to pay their last tribute of love and respect to the departed. Rev. Chas. M. Elderdice officiated at the services, assisted by Rev. J. L. Johnson. Interment was in Crisfield cemetery. The pall-bearers were: Jas. H. C1ullen, Edward R. Dize, Elyard S. H Holland, Wm. E. Daugherty, G. S. Tull and Frank Jones.
