Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Considine and daughter, Miss Mary, and Mrs. August Miller and daughter, Miss Frances, went to York Saturday, Feb. 21, in response to a message telling of the death of Sister Columbia Considine, sister of Mr. Considine and Mrs. Miller, at 6 o'clock that morning in the York convent. They remained until after the funeral. Sister Columbia had been a sufferer with consumption for eight years. On Wednesday, Feb. 18, Mr. Considine and Mrs. Miller and their mother, Mrs. John McGowen, of Ulysses, were called to York by serious illness of their sister, but as she seemingly became better and as Mrs. McGowan became ill they returned to David City. Mrs. McGowan was not able to go to York for the funeral of her daughter. A daughter of Mary and Stephen Considine, Sister Columbia was born at Elkhorn, December 18, 1870. The family later lived in Friend and in 1880 moved from there to Ulysses. Sister Columbia received her education in the Seward schools, and after leaving high school she took up the profession of teaching and for nine years taught in Seward, York and Butler counties, the last year in the first school north of David City. She then went to York and became a Sister in the Ursuline Order and for the remaining 25 years of her life was one of the principal teachers in the York convent college. The funeral services were held at 9 a. m. Monday, Feb. 23, in St. Joseph's Catholic church in York. Bishop O'Reilley, of Lincoln, preached the funeral sermon, and his secretary, Rev. Fr. Campso, was celebrant of the mass. Six young men, who when small boys were among Sister Columbia's first pupils in York, were the pallbearers. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at York. Surviving Sister Columbia are her mother, Mrs. McGowen, two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Coyle of Ulysses and Mrs. Miller, and two brothers, James Considine of Billings, Mont., and Patrick Considine. ```````````````````````````` Ulysses Dispatch (Ulysses, Nebr.), February 26, 1920, p. 8, col. 1 & 2 SISTER COLUMBA Sister Columba died at her home, the Ursuline Convent at York, Nebr., February 20, 1920, aged 49 years 2 months and 2 days. Mary Elizabeth Considine was born at Elkhorn, Nebr., December 18, 1870. When a baby in arms she moved with her parents to Lincoln and later settled on a homestead near Friend where she lived until 1881 when she moved to the vicinity of Ulysses. Her first school days were sepnt in the little sod house near Friend and the rural schools near Ulysses and Staplehurst. Later she attended Seward high school and spent eight years teaching in the public schools of Seward, York and Butler counties. While teaching near York she often visited the Sisters and learned to love them for their kindly ways and many noble deeds. Being of a deeply religious nature she knew of no better way to serve her divine master than to become one of them, so at the age of 23 hen all her future lay bright before her, she offered her life to the Lord and joined the Ursuline Order of Sisters. As a sister she was ever ready to lend a helping hand where ever needed but her principal work was teaching and taking care of the school children. After a number of years work in the convent schools of York, Laurence, Hartington and Falls City, she contracted tuberculosis but still performed many light tasks until a week before she died when she became much weaker. A few days later she sent word to her aged mother, her brothers and sisters that she knew her end was near. They went to her and after she had bidden them good bye and received the last sacrament of the church she passed peacefully away. She leaves to mourn her her mother, Mrs. Mary McGowen of Ulysses, two brothers James Considine of Billings, Montana, and P. J. Considine of David City and two sisters, Mrs. August Miller of David City and Mrs. W. J. Coyle of Ulysses, besides many nieces and nephews and one grand nephew. The funeral services were conducted Monday morning at the Catholic church at York by the Rev. Bishop O'Reilly of Lincoln and his Secretary, Father Campo. Six young men of York, former pupils of deceased acted as pallbearers and four little boys whom she had instructed, assisted at the altar. Many relatives and friends from David City, Ulysses, Staplehurst and Seward besides the Sisters and a host of friends from York followed the remains to their final resting place, the Catholic grave yard at York. Good bye dear sister. Tenderly we laid your form to rest. You asked us not to grieve, but said: - God know and does the best. Your life so pure, so full of love, As if by angels given, Will be to us a guiding star; We'll come to you in heaven. - Mrs. Coyle The condolence of the old friends at Ulysses and other towns where Sister Columba was known and deeply revered, is extended to the loved ones left behind. "Eternal rest grant unto her O, Lord, and may Light Perpetual shine upon her."
