Read More	Stephen Taaffe Sharkey was born in Dedham, MA, in 1897, the youngest of nine children of William Joseph Sharkey and Annie Cox, both from Ireland. Stephen's paternal great-grandfather, Stephen Taaffe, was born in County Louth, Ireland, approximately in 1775. Taaffe's daughter Catherine (known as Cath) Taaffe, born in Louth, married Patrick Sharkey, also born in Louth. Their ninth child, William Joseph Sharkey, also born in Louth, married Annie Cox in Ireland. William and Annie moved to Dedham, MA, along with her mother, Mary Dixon Cox. Nearly all of the family moved to Alameda County, California before 1910. There, the lives of two of their sons, Richard Henry Sharkey and Stephen Taaffe Sharkey, were closely intertwined by tragedy. In 1925, Richard was killed in a tragic accident, leaving his young wife, Delia Donahue, from Galway, with three small children in Albany, California. Richard's and Delia's siblings helped her, and 8 years later, Stephen married Delia, having devoted his life to caring for his brother's family, and having asked each of her children for permission before asking her. He was a quiet, gentle man with a good sense of humor, and his grandchildren adored him. Delia, having lost her father when she was small, then her husband when her children were all younger than ten years of age, made a good life with him. He worked as a carpenter, and eventually as an assistant manager of a lumber company. It is likely that Stephen was named after his great-grandfather, Stephen Taaffe, but the birth record in Dedham spelled his middle name "Taft." However, he spelled his middle name as his great-grandfather did.
