Description	:	Sylvin Roy Carr, was born September 28, 1920, near Robinson, KS, to the late Cyril Matthew and Effie Blanche Baxter Carr. He died Monday morning, December 14, 2015, at Oakley Place in Topeka, at the age of 95. Read More	Sylvin Roy Carr, was born September 28, 1920, near Robinson, KS, to the late Cyril Matthew and Effie Blanche Baxter Carr. He died Monday morning, December 14, 2015, at Oakley Place in Topeka, at the age of 95. The family moved to the Carr homestead 4 miles east of Willis when he was 3 years old and later attended Marak Grade School. Sylvin started helping on the family farm at an early age. At the age of 12, he started throwing bundles into the threshing machine and continued to work on the farm. He drove the team of horses before he could harness them. Sylvin and Ruth Ploeger were married on August 3, 1941, and moved on to the Carr homestead near Willis. Their daughter Ruth Ann was born while they lived there. They continued to farm the homestead until 1944 until the family moved to a farm NW of Hamlin, KS. Sylvin was a member of Tecumseh Methodist Church; joined the Masonic Lodge at Hamlin in 1951; and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. Sylvin and Ruth continued to farm in the Hamlin Community until 1960 upon which time they moved to Topeka. He took a job as a janitor for the state of Kansas, later advanced to a Maintenance Repair position for the State Surplus Property. He retired in December 1982, and they spent the next 25 years traveling in their motor homes though all 50 states. Sylvin was also preceded in death by his wife Ruth who died October 16, 2010; and a son, Robert Cyril lived only 11 months and died in 1946. Survivors include a daughter Ruth Ann Parker (Chuck) of rural Hoyt; a son William Sylvin Carr (Camille) of Tucson, AZ; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Sylvin’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, December 18, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Rev. Randy Quinn will officiate, with Masonic Committal Services a courtesy of Hiawatha Masonic Lodge. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
