A native of Terceira, Azores Islands, Mrs. Nunes came to this country and Humboldt County in 1919. She made her first home in Willow Brook (known today as Beatrice). Mrs. Nunes moved to Fortuna in 1952. She was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Fortuna, the Legion of Mary and St. Joseph's Women's Club. Mrs. Nunes is survived by her children, John J. Nunes of Eureka, Ernest D. Nunes of Beatrice, Mary Alameda of Fortuna, and Dervalena Weis of Petaluma; her daughter-in-law, Velma Nunes of Santa Rosa; her brother, Jack Nunes of Ferndale; her sisters, Mary Rebello of Rio Dell, Rose Gomes of Ferndale and Angie Gonsalves of Fortuna; her 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and numerous other relatives. Mrs. Nunes was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Nunes in 1959, and her son, Tony J. Nunes in 1968. Friends are invited to attend the Recitation of the Rosary at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fortuna tonight (Sept. 20) at 8 P.M. Friends may also attend a Mass of Christian Burial, also to be held at the church, on Saturday (Sept. 21) at 10 A.M. The Rev. Father Timothy O'Sullivan will serve as celebrant. Encryptment will follow at Ocean View Mausoleum, Eureka. Casketbearers will be Mrs. Nunes grandsons, Ernest Nunes, Jr., Dwight Nunes, Mike Nunes, John Nunes, Jeff Alameda, and Steve Weis. Arrangements are under the direction of Goble's Chapel, Fortuna. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
