Ted had a son from a previous relationship: Karl Joseph The following was written by Ted Roth in late 2017 or early 2018: I grew up on a dairy farm one half mile north of Whitewater, Kansas where I and my siblings were introduced to long hours of hard work during the Great Depression. I attended Whitewater grade school and high school. In February of 1942 I dropped out of high school during my senior year to volunteer for service in the U.S. Navy but I was needed at home to help on the farm. Finally on August 3, 1942 I was on a train to Kansas City to the Naval Recruiting Station. I went through Boot Camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Station located about 40 miles north of Chicago. Following Boot Camp I went through Aviation Machinist Mate School in Norman, Oklahoma. From there I attended the Naval Air Gunnery School in Purcell, Oklahoma. Then it was off to Jacksonville, Florida to the U.S. Naval Air Station where I entered into training in a P.B.Y. Squadron to learn about airplanes that land on water for submarine patrol duty on the East Coast. I transferred to San Diego, California in May of 1943 to go into training on B-24 land based planes which were four engine bombers getting ready for duty in the South Pacific. Training took place at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego. Replacement crews needed for deployment to the South Pacific assembled at the Consolidated Valltee Aircraft Factory in San Diego. I had a keen interest in the B-24 and was chosen to attend school at the aircraft factory and when I was called for duty, there were seven members in my crew. When we gathered to get acquainted, we were assigned to AIRCRAFT SERIAL NUMBER 67799, a serial number which I will remember for the rest of my life. The plane turned out to be a C87 which was converted into a passenger like plane and our crew was informed that we were to be the "Flag Plane" for the 7th Fleet and were to be stationed in Brisbane, Australia. From Brisbane we were transferred to Port Morsby, New Guinea. Port Morsby was the first flight into the war zone, which occurred on April 20, 1944 which was my 20th birthday. From Port Morsby our crew went to Hollandia, New Guinea and then the Leyte Islands in the Phillippines. Our crew was told that if we had to ditch the plane to choose water ant NOT the jungle. Our crew flew Admiral Thomas Kinkaid and eight other Admirals for the next year and a half and logged nearly 1000 hours all across the South Pacific. When the war ended our crew and our plane were stationed in the Leyte Islands. When back in the U.S. I was stationed at Olathe Naval Air Station. I have always been very passionate and emotional when speaking about my Naval career. After being discharged from the Navy on January 28, 1946 I went into the trucking business; I hauled livestock. On December 15, 1946 I married Lois Maxine Wilson in Wichita, Kansas. Lois was a teacher in Whitewater at the time. In 1958 I secured a job buying cattle for a firm in San Antonio, Texas. This led to buying for other firms in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Wichita Falls, Texas, Shreveport, Louisiana, Montgomery, Alabama, Ark City, Kansas and Kansas City. In 1961 I built a small stockyards one half mile east of Whitewater and started bringing calves from the southeastern part of the U.S. and selling them to local farmers. In 1967 there were nearly 17,000 cattle that went through my facility. I have always stated that this was the most enjoyable part of my life. In 1971 I sold the cattle and trucking business in order to help establish and become a partner in the Wichita Kenworth Truck Dealership. In 1974 I sold my interest in Kenworth and started Ted Roth Truck Sales which continued until 2003. I was a "dreamer" and built six motor homes from 1974 until 1992. Lois and I and the three younger girls took many trips in these motor homes, logging 183,000 miles in five of the six motor homes that I built. In 1976 I brushed off death. I was not feeling well and could not stand the smell of food. I lost 31 pounds in seven weeks and it was discovered that I had a large tumor on my stomach which turned out to be cancer and if not treated immediately it would be fatal in six months. My brother, Bob convinced me to forget the surgery I was to have the next day and go to Mexico for treatment. I flew to Mexico a few days later and went into a treatment with Laetrile which worked out well. This was one of many times in my life that the prayers of my parents and others spared my life. I was a member of the Swiss Mennonite Church from 1942 until 1995. I then joined the Palmyra Baptist Church for two years and then joined the First Mennonite Church in Burns, Kansas. After a heart attack in June of 2004 I closed my business and everything was sold. Lois and I moved to Newton where we both joined the First Church of the Nazarene. I have been a member of the American Legion Post #65 in Whitewater from 1946 until this day. Lois and I were members of the Family Motor Coach Club, the Good Sams Club and the Pelican Travelers Club of Shreveport, Louisiana for many years. Special friends have had a great influence and added much enjoyment to my life. Some of those special friends include G. Christian Weiss, Jim and Barbara Law, Arnold Ensz, Elmer Reimer, Blaine Bowlin, Paul Androes and many friends from the Nazarene Church not to mention all of my friends in and around Whitewater. My mother, Hazel Mellor Roth, passed away in 1979 and my father, Theodore Roth, Sr, passed away in 1981. My life was deeply affected by the passing of my brother Paul (Buddy) in 1955, Daryl (Fritz) in 1965, Robert (Bob) in 1967 and Wilford (Bill) in 2004. My only surviving sibling at the time of this writing is Betty Janzen who is in a nursing facility in Kentucky. I lost my wife of 65 years (Lois) on March 3, 2012. On August 28, 2012 I lost my son, Mike, to cancer. In April of 2016 I lost my daughter, Julie, to suicide. I still have my other children: Karl of Australia, Jeannie of Oklahoma, Margie, John, Fritzie and Kristie all of Kansas and a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren. My life has been blessed. I thank God for that each and every single day.
