On Friday evening, June 8, 1917, at 5:30 o'clock, Thomas J. Cassutt, one of Guttenberg's long-time residents and business men, passed away at his home in this city, after a short illness. On Wednesday evening, June 6, about 10:30 o'clock he suffered a stroke of paralysis, and remained unconscious from that time on until Friday evening, when death called him. All that loving hands could do and medical knowledge could suggest was done for him, but all failed. His sudden passing away was a shock for his family and many friends. He was born at Fellars, Switzerland, on March 15, 1858, and was therefore 59 years, 2 months and 16 days of age at the time of his death. In the year 1860 he came with his parents to the United States, settling at Guttenberg, Iowa, for a time and then going to Elkader, Iowa, where he lived for some time, later returning to Guttenberg, where he lived and was successfully engaged in business for many years and up to the time of his death. On April 12/13, 1882, he was married to Miss Lizze Kossuth, of this city. Mr. Cassutt was a man of spendid character and his life had been a life of service, and those who were intimately acquainted with him felt that his life exemplified the hightest and truest ideals of manhood. Doing kind acts for others was his greatest pleasure in life, which won him many friends, and by whom he will never be forgotten. His death is deeply mourned by his wife, four sons, John, Thomas, Rudolph and Clarence, three daughters, Mrs. Mayme Anderegg and Miss Elizabeth Cassutt, all of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Emma Kramer of Buhl, Idaho, a number of grandchildren, two brothers, Casper Cassutt, of South Dakota, and Anton Cassutt, of Elkader, Iowa, and a large number of other relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed. Mrs. Emma Kramer was unable to be in attendance of the funeral on account of illness. Funeral services were held at his late home in this city on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. K. W. Brown, of Garnavillo, officiating. Interment was made in the City Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near which showed that deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him. In the death of Mr. Cassutt Guttenberg mourns the loss of one of its finest citizens, and the family a very kind and loving husband and father. A very good man has left his earthly abode for a home whose builder is God. To the bereaved family is extended the kindest sympathy of all in this community.
