March 24, 1937 - Carroll Daily - Mrs. William J Barloon, a prominent resident of Carroll, passed away suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday afternoon at the apartment of her daughter, Miss Patricia Barloon in Muscatine. Her death came as a distinct shock to her family and friends as of late she had been in better health than for some time past. She had spent the winter with her daughter, Miss Patricia, while resting and recouperating from a long illness and had planned to return to her home here on Easter Sunday. Mrs. Barloon had been in ill health since last winter when she suffered from heart trouble which kept her bedfast for several months. She improved during the ensuing months and alhtough not able to enjoy her customary activity, she was able to be up and about and mingle with her frineds. In October she went to Excelsior Springs, MO, where she submitted to an operation from which she recovered nicely. In the following months she went to Muscatine to spend the winter with her daughter, Miss Patricia, in the hopes that rest would aid in regaining her health. She showed continued improvement and her sudden passing was very unexpected. She was 61 years old. The body, accompanied by Miss Patricia Barloon of Muscatine and Mr and Mrs Wilbur J Barloon and family of Davenport, will arrive in Carroll at 8:30 o'clock Wednesday night and will be taken to the Kircher-Deitrich funeral home. Pending the arrival of the relatives with the body, funeral arrangements have not been completed. The body will be at the funeral home until the day before the services, when it will be taken to the family home, 225 E Ninth street, to remain there over night. Mrs. Barloon was born Mary Ellen Ryan, oldest daughter of James and Nora Ryan, at Decatur, Illinois, Sept. 20, 1875. She was a child of seven when she came to Carroll county with her parents, who located on their farm, the old Ryan homestead near Maple River. She attended the rural school in her district and St. Joseph's school in Carroll, following which she enrolled at the Carroll Normal college. After completing her course at the old normal school, which stood in the northwest part of Carroll, she taught in the rural schools of Carroll county. She later attended Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls, where she met Mr. Barloon, who was also a student there. For a number of years she taught in the south side public school of Carroll. On June 19, 1900, at St. Joseph's church she became the bride of William J. Barloon. Rev. Father Phalen performed the ceremony. They located at Ossian, Ia., residing there for one year before moving to Breda, where Mr. Barloon taught school for two years. When Mr. Barloon was elected Carroll county superintendent of schools they moved to Carroll from Breda. Later they resided for seven and one half years at Armour, S.D., where Mr. Barloon operated a bank. Returning to Carroll about 23 years ago, they have lived here since that time. They have resided in their present home for the last 16 years. Surviving Mrs. Barloon are her husband, two sons and two daughters: Wilbur J. Barloon, Davenport; Miss Patricia Barloon, Muscatine; Marvin J. Barloon, Cleveland, O., and Mrs. Louis J. Timmerman (Camilla), Lake City; two grandsons, Jack and Jimmy Barloon, of Davenport; two brothers, T.J. Ryan of Carroll and Dan Ryan of Mason City; and one sister, Mrs. M.L. Collison of Carroll. Two sisters preceded her in death, Nellie, who died about 13 years ago, and Nettie, who passed away when a young girl. Her father died Sept. 28, 1931, and her mother, March 14, 1920. Mrs. Barloon was a member of St. Joseph's church and the Married Ladies Sodality of the parish. She was deeply interested in church work. She was also an active member of Court St. Rose of Lima, No. 6, Catholic Daughters of America. Club work was another of her interests and she was one of the organizers, and a charter member of the Newman Study club. Of a literary bent, she enjoyed reading and studying. She wrote poetry and some of her poems have been published. One recently appeared in the Sunday Visitor, a magazine published; at Huntington, Ind. Marvin J. Barloon of Cleveland, 0, will be here to attend the funeral services. Joe Ryan of Omaha and Miss Marie Ryan, a student at Duchesne college, nephew and niece of Mrs. Barloon, are also coming. Miss Marie will arrive Wednesday night.
