Gravatt, passed away Sunday morning, January 17, at the local hospital, where he had been a patient since a fall on December 7, when his left hip was fractured. Mr. Winslow was visiting here in the home of his daughter when the accident occurred. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church in Terril with burial at the Terril cemetery. A short service was held at the Bumgardner Funeral Home here preceding the Terril service. Uriah A Winslow, youngest son of John and Jane (White) Winslow, was born at Seymour, Indiana, November 8, 1856, and passed away at the Spirit Lake Hospital January 17, 1943, in his 87th year. In spite of his advanced age he enjoyed comparatively good health until December 7th when he fell and fractured his hip. Since then he has been bedfast until Sunday morning when his life ebbed away as tho to meet the new day in yonder land. He came to Iowa with his parents when a small boy, settling at New Providence in Hardin County where his father homesteaded. The trip was made by covered wagon. There he grew to manhood. He was married to Evelyn Marie Robinson March 22, 1878, and they established their home on a farm near Hubbard, Iowa. Seven children came to this home. The third child, John, died in infancy. The sixth child, Walter, passed away in his early married life at Jackson, Minn. The surviving children are; Mrs. Florence Cruse of Spencer, Mrs. Maude Gravatt of Spirit Lake, Mrs. Laura Starkey of Everly, Mr. Charles Winslow of Spencer and Mr. Ross Winslow of Terril. In 1894 Mr. and Mrs. Winslow moved to Dickinson County where he purchased 160 acres of prairie land near Terril. Here he broke the sod, set up buildings and experienced the hardship of a pioneer. The funeral of his 87 year old father was the first funeral in the Mount Chapel Church, where he and his family attended at that time. After his wife's death on January 15, 1915, he farmed with his son Walter in Minnesota, returning to Dickinson and Clay Counties in 1935 to live with his children. Since his retirement from active work he has developed a hobby of wood carving, which occupied his time and afforded him much pleasure. Mr. Winslow was a member of the Friends Church having inherited a Quaker ancestry and kept the faith throughout his life. As a boy he attended one of the Lincoln meetings with his father and carried thru life a clear remembrance of the great Emancipator. The purpose of his whittling was to bring happiness to others by giving someone a finished product. He was a great reader and lover of music, always kept abreast of the times and to his last days retained his interest in world events, friends, his children and grandchildren. Living in various communities with his children, he acquired a large circle of friends whose cards and letters helped to brighten the days of illness. Thru the weeks of hospital confinement he showed enduring patience and grateful appreciation of tender, thoughtful care. Though ready to go, he had a will to recover and return the many kindnesses shown him. The long journey of more than four score years had taken its toll and his spirit was released to the Eternal Home which the Master had gone to prepare for those who loved him. Besides his children he leaves to mourn his departure 15 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, one niece, three nephews and innumerable friends. * The Spirit Lake Beacon, Jan. 21, 1943 ----------------
