Read More	Death claimed a lovable character when on Friday, April 17, he called for Mrs. S. L. McFarland of Peaceville Community, south of Malvern. The first of March the McFarlands moved from their Whitecloud home to the Frank Crouse place in Peaceville, which they had purchased a short time before. Mrs. McFarland had suffered for two years from a stroke of paralysis, but it affected not her genial and lovable nature. In the days of her health it was a joy to be in her home and catch the wholesome spirt in her life. The funeral occurred from the home on Sunday April 19, and interment was in the Malvern Cemetery near by. The services were conducted by Rev. Caldell of the M. E. Church, Malvern and he very appropriately introduced his sermon with the poem, "If I Should Die Tonight," which was a favorite of the deceased. Neighbors and friends from far and near pay tribute to her as one worthy of friendship. Valeria Hamlin was born at Terre Haute, Indiana, April 14, 1848. She moved with her parents to Greencastle, Indiana, where she resided for a number of years. She united with the Baptist Church when fourteen years of age. In 1865, she was married to George Akers of Greencastle, Indiana, moving in 1866 to Mills County, Iowa. To this union were born three children, two of whom preceded her in death, one son, William Zell, aged 24 years, and one daughter, Lena, aged 18 years. Mrs. C. E. Shay of Loveland, Colorado, the remaining daughter, arrived yesterday to attend the funeral. In 1880 she was married to S. L. McFarland of Hastings. To this union, one son, Fred McFarland of Malvern, was born. Mrs. McFarland departed this life, Friday, April 17, 1914, at the age of 66 years and 3 days. She is survived by her husband, one son and one daughter, and six grandchildren, who together with a host of friends mourn her loss. The deceased was a kind indulgent mother, a true helpmate and loving wife, and a friend to all. Two years ago she was stricken with paralysis from which she never recovered, being for two years or more an invalid, always gentle and patient. The immediate cause of her death was an attack of la grippe, being ill only a few days when the Peace Angel came and she gently passed to the brighter life. Malvern Leader, April 20, 1914, page 1
