Description	:	Stanberry Leander McFarland, one of the pioneer residents of Mills County, died at the Lord Lister Hospital in Omaha early Saturday morning, October 22, following a few weeks illness. Paul H. Hicks. A special choie, R. W. Criswell and Mr. Parker, Mrs. F. R. Chantry, and Mrs. D. O. Cunningham with Mrs. L. D. Fletcher at the piano sang. A profusion of beautiful flowers testified to the loving remembrance of friends and relatives. A large number of his old time friends and neighbors were in attendance to pay their last respects to their old time friend. The pallbearers were old time friends and neighbors of Mr. McFarland, John Clayton, Ed Piburn, Harry Rickabaugh, Ernest Rickabaugh, T. M. Davis, and W. P. Wortman. He was buried by the side of his wife in the Malvern Cemetery. S. F. McFarland was born in Buchanan County, Missouri, March 12, 1950. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1852 when but two years old locating in the old South Grove neighborhood in Mills County and the greater part of his life was spent in this county. He was married to Valeria Akers at Hastings, Iowa in 1880. To them was born one son, Fred, now of Omaha, who survives him. Mrs. McFarland died April 17, 1914, since which time he has made his home with his son, Fred. A few years ago they moved to Tabor and later to Omaha, where he spent his last days. He engaged in farming as his life's work and followed that all his life until he retired from active work, a short time ago. He was a good farmer and was one of the first to engage in the pure bred swine industry. He was a man of strong physique and rugged health and was never sick until the last few years. He was taken sick September 22 and on October 4 was taken to the Lord Lister Hospital in the hope that the treatment there would put him in condition for an operation, but he was unable to regain his strength and passed away October 22. He is survived by his son, Fred, three grandchildren, Edna, Louis, and Fred, and one great grandchild, three brothers, L. H. of Malvern, M. L. of Courath, Wisconsin, and W. A. of Neman Grove, Nebraska; and one sister, Laura Hummel and half brother, John Hummel of Malvern. This passes another of the sturdy pioneers of Mills County. For nearly seventy years he made his home enduring all the hardships and privations incident to the early history of the county. Posterity owe much to these pioneers.
