VERA GENEVA BOWMAN Vera, daughter of George and Nellie Fobes Riedesel, was born March 16, 1902 on a farm west of Guthrie Center in Guthrie County. She graduated from Glidden High School with the Class of 1920. After completing high school, Vera worked as a telephone operator in Glidden. On January 20, 1921, Vera married Charles W. Bowman in Jefferson. Three sons, George, Gerald and Robert L., were born to this union. Vera and Charles made their home on a farm in Greene County from 1921 to 1929. They then moved to the present family farm north of Coon Rapids in Carroll County. In 1953 they began spending the winters in Texas, Arizona and Florida and finally moved to Florida in 1960. Charles died there in October of 1975. Vera remained there until entering Friendship Haven West in Fort Dodge in 1987. In 1989 she moved to Tompkins Memorial Health Center at Friendship Haven. On September 17, 1997, Vera died at Tompkins Memorial Health Center following a lengthy illness. She reached the age of 95 years, seven months and one day. Vera was a member of the Carrollton Community Club and the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. She loved to crochet afghans and doilies and work on the farm. Besides her husband, Vera was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, Robert L. Bowman; two brothers, Warren and Elmer Riedesel; and five sisters: Verna Iseminger, Maude Pearson, Edna Miller, Agnes Riedesel. Survivors include two sons: George Bowman and his wife, Marguerite, and Gerald Bowman and his wife, Darlene, all of Coon Rapids; nine grandchildren: Donna and her husband, George Varchola, of Davenport; Mary Beth and her husband, Bill Jahn, of Des Moines; Dave Bowman and his wife, Becky, of Carroll; Vickie and her husband, Jordan Briley, of California; Cheryl and her husband, Ron Wolfe, of California; Gary Bowman and his wife, Sharon, of Carroll; Ron Bowman and his wife, Nancy, of Glidden; Annette and her husband, Troy Halbur, of Des Moines; and Jeanine and her husband, Greg Mowrey, of Des Moines; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Mosher, of Bellevue, Nebraska; and by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
