Pero-Mills Obit- Nov. 19, 1976 Centralia, WA "Daily Chronicle" Pioneer Centralian Vern Dunning Dies Part of Centralia's pioneer history died Thursday in a Centralia nursing home. Vernon Dunning, a resident of Centralia for the past 87 years, died late Thursday afternoon at the age of 94. He was born Feb. 22, 1882, in Quincy, Mich. and moved to Centralia in 1889, when the town was "just the road coming in and a little grocery store" Dunning recalled in an extensive interview several months ago. Dunning worked as a logger, mill band and shingle weaver before joining the U.S. Postal Service in 1911. He retired from the post office in 1946, working for eight years for the City of Centralia at the water intake, following his retirement from the post office. Dunning is survived by his widow, Edna A. Dunning, Centralia, one daughter, Mrs. Gwynne Hansen, Centralia; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Dorothy Slavick and Mrs. Doloris Breedlove, both of Tacoma, and Mrs. Pearl Hovack, Hampton, Va.; 33 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildrn. Burial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Mountain View Cemetery, the Rev. Dennis Weaver officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Newell-Hoerling's. Dunning was a very good friend of George Washington, founder of Centralia, and was credited with saving Washington's life after the towns founder was poisoned with carbolic acid. Dunning had a good sense of humor and a quick wit. His vivid memory was helpful to many historians researching early Centralia.
