Description	:	Final rites for one of Mills county's oldest residents were held Thursday when services for Mrs. Viola Edna Sowers were conducted in the Wesley Chapel Church by the pastor, the Rev. Fred Martin. Mrs. Sowers, 81, had lived in Mills County since childhood. Music for the services were furnished by Frederick Larson who was accompanied by Mrs. Merrill Warren. Serving as pall bearers were Lynn Parker, Hiram Cool, Ray V. Plumb, Marion Plumb, B. E. Houser, and Ben Wilson. Funeral arrangements were cared for by Mansfield's Funeral Home and burial was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Martin read the following sketch: Viola Edna Shook, daughter of Albert and Clara Shook, was born January 2, 1876 in Bigsville, Illinois, and passed away from this life December 23, 1957 at the age of 81 years, 11 months, and 21 days. She came to Iowa with her parents when a small girl and grew to young womanhood in this vicinity of southwest Iowa. She was graduated from the Emerson high school and before she was married taught in the public schools. She was a member of the Wesley Chapel Church, transferring her membership to the Malvern Methodist Church after changing her residence to Malvern. She was married to James M. Sowers on March 4 1897 at Red Oak, and to this union three children were born. They are Harold L. Sowers of Emerson, Mrs. Ruth L. Bently of Stanton, and Waldon I. Sowers who preceded her in death. Her husband also passed away February 8, 1953. She was the eldest of 12 children of whom five brothers and two sisters survive; two brothers and two sisters having preceded her in death. Besides her two children and her seven brothers and sisters, Glen Shook, Ada Miller, and Earl Shook of red Oak, Lottie Thrapp, Ivan Shook, Eldridge Shook of Emerson, and Clyde Shook of Glenwood, she is survived by seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
