Howard, 82, formerly of Hiawatha, died late Wednesday evening, July 11, 2012, at Kansas City Hospice House. Virginia was born at Hiawatha, May 1, 1930, one of two children of Merle and Edith Mellenbruch Gilliland. She grew up in Hiawatha where she attended school, later graduating from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1947. She worked at Insurance Services, J.C. Penny Custom Decorating, and was manager of Motherhood Maternity in Topeka for several years. In her retirement years in Hiawatha, she worked as a part time receptionist at Framke Casselman Meek Funeral Home. She married John "Jack" Howard, September 7, 1947, at Hiawatha. They lived in 37 different homes during their working life including Hiawatha, Cimarron, Junction City, spending 20 years in Topeka, retiring to Hiawatha in 1990's. Jack died December 27, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and her brother Charles Gilliland. Mrs. Howard was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha; Matinee Music Club; and Sorosis Study Club, both of Hiawatha. She enjoyed painting, reading, and doing cross word puzzles. Survivors include five children: John (Mickey) Howard, Jr. of Leawood, KS, Cheryl (Bill) Truett of Phoenix, AZ, Ed (Linda) Howard of Wichita, KS, Steve (Linda) Howard of Van Buren, AR, Bob (Sandy) Howard of Topeka; sister in law Judy Gilliland of Hiawatha; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. A celebration of Virginia's life is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, July 16, at First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha. Reverend Randy Quinn will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha from 12 noon Sunday until 6 that evening. Memorial contributions are suggested to First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or Kansas City Hospice; which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434.
