Read More	OBITUARY AND ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT VIVIAN SLOAN-OST OBITUARY: Vivian Mary Kennedy Sloan Ost was born in 1908 in Kansas. Born to David Ernest and Arminta Jane (Barnett) Kennedy, she was the 7th of 13 children. She passed away July 18, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center at Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 91 years, 3 months and 21 days. Vivian graduated from Esbon High School in 1926. She married Wiley Sloan on February 24, 1930. Wiley passed away on January 3, 1951. This marriage was blessed with two daughters, Doris and Pat; six grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. On October 12, 1953, Vivian married Ernest Ost. Ernest passed away on May 30, 1961. This marriage blessed Vivian with four step-children. Preceding her in death were step-son Arden Ost and step-daughter Marilyn Snyder. Vivian left ten step-grandchildren, twenty-six step-great-grandchildren, and three step-great-great- grandchildren . Vivian taught country school for three years before she was married and for one year after. She later worked at the Esbon elevator as a bookkeeper. She also served as Clerk of the District Court in Jewell County. She was a member of many organizations including: Merry Mixer Club, Liberty Club, Garden Club, Biedgette Club, Extension Home Unit, Desire Tobey Sears Chapter of- DAR, and served as chairman of the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association of Jewell County. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mankato. Vivian collected all types of giraffe figurines, cards, materials and crafts, enjoying each gift she was given. She also avidly collected depression glass and antiques. Her giraffe collection was well known and she was reported to have approximately 1000 ceramic and other types of miniature giraffes. Vivian kept busy helping her grandsons on paper routes for twenty-two years, as well as attending their ball games and going to garage sales. She took many nice trips with family and friends, including special trips taken to Hawaii and Switzerland. Other left to mourn Vivian's passing include one sister, Jessie Muck of Mankato, Kansas, one brother Kenneth Kennedy and wife, Gladys, of Lebanon, Kansas, five sister-in-laws, Lorraine and husband, Ray Rosebaugh of Beloit, Kansas, Elta Kennedy of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Julia Kennedy of Jermyn, Pennsylvania, Pearl Hancock, Mankato, Kansas, Dorothy Sloan, Los Cruces New Mexico, and a host of relatives and friends. ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: In her early school days, her name was sometimes written as Vivien; however, by high school it was consistently Vivian. Vivian played forward on the girl’s basketball team in high school in Esbon, Kansas. Her team won the District Championship in 1925 when she was a junior. That was a highlight of her school days. Vivian frequently rode horses. There are many family photos of her on a horse at various ages. She also drove a horse and buggy to visit friends when she was in school. She attended Kansas State Teachers College of Hays, Kansas during at least two summers to obtain or update her teaching certificate. In July 1936, Vivian and Wiley’s house caught fire and burned down. Some of the furniture was saved but many of their possessions were lost, including most family photos, letters, and documents. On many occasions Vivian took care of other people’s children for periods of several days when their parents needed help. Vivian liked to have fun and laugh, and had an unusually happy, infectious laugh. When Vivian was hired to work at Rhea’s Variety Store in 1952, a younger woman who worked there was not happy because she thought Vivian was “old” and wouldn’t be any fun. The young woman later said she was really wrong—she had never had so much fun. Vivian’s niece Ruth (Muck) Ladd wrote after Vivian’s death “She was fun. Fun to be around. Fun to talk to. Fun to do things with. She had a special knack for making the most mundane, everyday tasks...fun.” Ruth concluded “Somewhere the angels are laughing!” Additional information about Vivian’s early years can be found in the biographical information for her life-long close friend Mabel (Riemenschneider) Conrad. Vivian’s second husband Ernest Ost was buried with his first wife who was the mother of his children. Similarly, Vivian was buried with her first husband who was the father of her children.
