Read More	OBITUARY AND ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT KENNETH G. KENNEDY OBITUARY: Kenneth Glenn Kennedy was born in 1912 in Kansas, to David Ernest and Arminta Jane (Barnett) Kennedy. He died at Infinia in Smith Center on June 12, 2004, age 91. He attended school at Lone Tree and Union 2. He worked for many farmers then started working as a me¬chanic for his uncle, Roy Dutton, at the Home Garage in Esbon. He was married to Gladys Schuette August 16, 1940, at the Phillips County Court-house, Phillipsburg, Kansas. They attended the rodeo after the marriage. He started working for Schuette Motor Company in 1941 and they moved to Lebanon. He was drafted into the Army Air Force in February of 1943, taking training in Florida, Washington and South Dakota. He was in England during the time they were being bombed by Germany in 1944 and 1945, getting home July 5, 1945. He then was in Liberal, Kansas, a few months, getting his discharge at Amarillo, Texas. He and his brother-in-law, R. J. Schuette, became owners of Schuette Motor Company, first with H. J. Schuette and then as partners after Hank's death. Kenneth was the parts man and service man after several years as mechanic. Kenneth and several of his brothers were baseball players. As a left hander, Kenneth became a switch hitter and also pitched. He loved baseball and was a coach for the PeeWee teams for several years and always encouraged his children to play. He always enjoyed the local games that his children and grandchildren were in and other young people of the community. Kenneth worked with the Hub Club and helped in the Boy Scout financial drives. He also took Boy Scouts to outings. He was a member of Gordon M. Brown American Legion for over 50 years in Lebanon. He became a member of the Lebanon Christian Church when he was baptized along with his sons, Kent and Carl, in February 1959. He served as a deacon for several years. He especially enjoyed Sunday School and was president of his class many years. Kenneth and Gladys had five children, Kay, Kent, Carl, Joe and Lynn. He taught his sons and one daughter to be mechanics. He enjoyed time with the children, grandchildren and their spouses, also the great-grandchildren. Kenneth was the last of 13 children. Preceding him in death were brothers: Dr. Charles, Forrest, David, Lyall, Byron, James (Pete), Donald, and Morris; and sisters: Georgia Obert, Frances Obert, Jessie Muck, and Vivian Ost. Also, son-in-law, Bob Weber. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; his five children; ten grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Elta (James) Kennedy, Julia (Morris) Kennedy and Millie (Raymond) Schuette, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the Lebanon Christian Church, Lebanon, with Pastor Lance McDowell officiating. Soloist, Annette Kennedy, sang "Precious Lord, Take My Hand," and "How Could I Ask for More." The congregational hymn was "Shall We Gather at the River," accompanied by pianist, Phyllis Bell. Memories about Dad were shared by Kay Weber. Casket bearers were Anne Rogers, Todd Kennedy, Nicole Kennedy, Brodie Kennedy, Arminta Culver, Kenneth Weber, Jessica Kennedy, Tyler Kennedy, Joel Schneider and Samantha Schneider. Honorary bearers were Richard Dietz, Randy Merritt, Gary Merritt, Don Thornton, Leland Roush, Lynn Thompson, J. D. Manely, Arden Roush, Paul Smith and Howard Dietz. ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Kenneth was left handed but broke his left arm in childhood and had to use his right hand while his arm healed. After his arm had healed he was running on ice one day when his mother warned him to be careful or he would break his arm again. He ignored her and soon fell and broke his left arm again. That gave him more practice at using his right hand. As a result, he could generally use either hand for most activities. For the Kennedy boys, the most significant result of his two broken arms was that he became a switch hitter when playing baseball. Kenneth started high school, but after six weeks became sick and could not play football. He decided that was not for him, stopped school, and started working. Kenneth was driving a car with two passengers on June 15, 1934 when the car hit a mud hole on a curve and flipped over. Pauline Phillips, age 18, died in the accident. Her brother and Kenneth had only minor injuries. Family was always important to Kenneth. Every Sunday afternoon when his parents were alive, Kenneth took his family to visit them in Esbon. Others in the extended family were usually there. In later years he would take his sisters out to eat almost every Sunday, and drive them to visit each other when they were separated. He also drove his sisters Jessie and Vivian, along with his wife Gladys, on several trips. These included trips to visit Jessie's daughter and family-in Illinois, to California to visit brother Charlie, to Wisconsin to visit the original Kennedy home, and various trips in Kansas.
