Wilkins was born Sept. 6, 1872 in Dimmick township, LaSalle county, IL., and died at Norfolk, NE., July 29, 1906, aged 33 years, 10 months and 22 days. He came with his parents to Victor, November 5, 1875, the family continuing to live in this vicinity from that time until the present. In the fall of 1897 he went to Des Moines and entered the employment of his uncle, Capt. Wilkins. On June 14, 1898 he enlisted in Co. H. Capt. Emory C. Worthington, of the 51st Iowa regiment, for service in the Spanish American war. He went with his regiment to the Phillippine Islands on the transport Pennsylvania, spending 91 days on the vessel enroute and while stationed at Ho Ho. The regiment entered active service at Manila and participated in all the marching and fighting during that campaign, 13 engagements being endorsed on his discharge. Walter's service record was that he never missed a roll call nor a meal. His captains endorsement on the back of his discharge reads "Service, honest, and faithful: Character-excellent." He was honorably discharged with his regiment at Presido, CA., on Nov. 2, 1899, having served 16 1/2 months. He returned to Victor and on February 27, 1900 was married to Miss Mae Raffensperger, continuing his residence here until his death. He was identifed with the business life of the town as a member of the hardware firm of Cook & Wilkins and later in the same business as Wilkins & Lanning, from which, whle enjoying a fine business and with success apparently assured, he was forced by failing health in with his doctors advise a change in climate and after settling his affairs he and his father Thomas J. Wilkins, went to Wyoming to attend the opening of the Shoshoni Indian reservation. They spent a week at Shoshoni registered for numbers and started for home July 27th, feeling better than for months. Walter was taken sick on the train, but by the advice of physicians and at his own urgent request continued the journey toward the home he was never to see. At 12:30 the next day, July 28, he breathed his last just as the train slowed for a stop at Norfolk, NE. The aged and grief stricken father reached Victor with the body of his only son on Monday. The funeral was held on Tuesday, July 31, from his late home, Rev. G. H. Hanawult preaching the sermon, and the Knights of Pythias lodge, of which he was a member, acting as escort. All business houses were closed during the service and the whole community attended to show the universal respect in which he was held. It has said of Walter Wilkins that he did not have an enemy. His dominent characteristics were energy, courage, love for his work and especially love for his family. If life had been granted he would have made an increasingly useful citizen. As his fellow townspeople have united in respecting him, they now unite to mourn. He leaves to mourn him of his immediate family, his wife and baby Janet, his father, mother and two sisters, all of Victor.
