Vincent Magruder Warren Vincent Magruder, Sr., 95, who lived all of his life within a three-mile radius of his home at 9615 Georgetown Road, Bethesda, died Monday morning [ed. note: 5-5-1952] at Suburban Hospital of coronary thrombosis. Born on Lux Lane, Mr. Magruder was the son of a man who also had lived all of his life within a half-mile radius of his birthplace [ed. note: William Holmes Magruder (1818 – 1901)]. The Magruder clan for centuries has occupied a prominent place in Montgomery County circles. Samuel Wade Magruder of Revolutionary War fame was W. Vincent Magruder's great grandfather. Mr. Magruder's education was received at the Bean School which once stood near the intersection of Georgetown Road and Grosvenor Lane. His classmates have all passed away. This one-room country school gave Mr. Magruder a good foundation in reading, writing and arithmetic and his father taught him how to farm. He followed his father's footsteps because he loved the soil. Mr. Magruder used to reminisce about his boyhood days when he would throw a bag of corn over the saddle, evenly distributing the grain in each end of the bag so it would balance, then climb on the horse and start for William Orndorff's mill. Corn bread was the main part of the daily diet in those days. Grinding grain for flour was a more complicated and costly process, hence biscuits were a luxury. The sense of horror that gripped the nation when President Lincoln-was assassinated was also recalled many times by Mr. Magruder. He never forgot the newspaper picture of the four people who were hanged for their implication in the plot. Their bodies swung in a row from the gallows like the farmers' hogs at butchering time, according to Mr. Magruder. A trip into Washington in his early boyhood days, Mr. Magruder liked to recall, was an event. The family paid a yearly fee of $2 in order to travel over the toll road. The old toll house stood on Wisconsin Avenue at a point opposite what is now the Community Paint and Hardware. Later it was moved into Tenleytown. Mr. Magruder's wife died in 1938 [ed. note: Annie Renshaw Magruder]. Since then his daughter, Mrs. Frances M. Stevens had made her home with her father at the Georgetown Road address. Other survivors include Mrs. G. Wady Imirie [Sue] of Bethesda, and Mrs. Solomon Morgan [Ellen], Warren Vincent Magruder, Jr., and Henry R. Magruder of Washington; and Mrs. Ray Brenner [Anna] of Evanston, 111., nine grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Burial was in Rockville Union Cemetery.
