McWhirter was born March 19, 1925, in Jefferson County, the son of Ray and Mary McCormick McWhirter. A resident of the Birmingham community most of his life, he attended Fairfield schools and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1942. On July 15, 1944, he married Dora Skaggs in Fairfield. He was employed as an engineer at Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline for 33 years before his retirement. He also farmed in Union Township, Van Buren County. Surviving are his wife of rural Birmingham; a son, Ronald of Fairfield; two daughters, Cheryl Lyon of Libertyville , Carol Hervey of Birmingham; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; two brothers, Rodger of Burlington and Edward of Batavia. His parents preceded him in death.
