He attempted to cross it on horseback and it is supposed his horse stumbled and threw him, and as he could not swim, he drowned. He was an old and respected settler of Solomon township. Glasco Sun, Aug. 8, 1885, page 1: Last Monday evening the sad intelligence was brought to town that William Abbott was drowned. He went after his cattle in the pasture, which was cut off by the back water from the river, and had to cross a narrow sink in which the water was eight or ten feet deep. The horse in swimming the water threw him off and returned without him. Mr. Missel hurried around as fast as he could and gave notice of the accident. People gathered there and after the heavy shower in the forepart of the evening was over succeeded in securing his body. He was buried by the Grand Army Post on Wednesday. Deceased was forty-five years old; settled in this township in 1868, and by his many qualities won the friendship and esteem of all. He leaves a sorrowing wife and four children to mourn his untimely death. Mr. Abbott was since his youth a working member of the M.E. Church, and was one of its soundest pillars at the time of his death. Clyde Herald, Thursday, Aug. 13, 1885, page 1: (from the column by a traveling preacher) As per arrangement I came to Glasco yesterday and found the people excited over a very sad casualty that had just occurred. Mr. Wm. Abbott, an old resident, in attempting to cross a creek filled with water backed up from the river, in some way lost his balance and was drowned ---- another sad evidence that in the midst of life we are in death. Mr. Abbott was a member of the M.E. Church. His funeral today (Aug.) 5th was largely attended. J.B. Clyde Herald, Thursday, Aug. 20, 1885, page 2: Beloit Gazette: Wm. Abbott, an old citizen and prominent farmer of the southern part of Cloud county, was drowned in a "draw" on his farm last Tuesday, while trying to cross to look after some cattle.
