Description	:	William was the son of Alex McCrady and Mary Streetts. His parents seem to have died young. Alex is most likely from one the Washington County, Pa. McCready lines. A couple of them went into Columbiana County, Pa. I have not figured out exactly which one of these we descend from. I do not know where Alex and Mary are buried. The name was McCrady was spelled with and without the e. William used the e when he signed the witness paper in his brother in law Charles Dray's pension paper. He also filed his pension papers... He also filed his pension papers with the e . He is the brother of Sarah Elizabeth McCrady Dray. William married Catherine Dray on Sept. 5, 1852 in Columbiana County, Ohio. They had five known children; Charles, Udorah, Henry, Hannah and Eliza. The following information was in my uncle's Civil War pension which I have. The dates on the memorial are from the military record. He applied for his pension and filed his papers at South Willford, Indiana., Attorney was of LaGrange, Indiana Nov. 19, 1884. He had to fight for years to get the pension because they claimed the injury was before his service. His pension number was # 348.390 Wm. enlisted 1st July 1861 in Co. C. 5th Iowa Infantry. He was discharged 14 September 1861. Description dark complexion, black hair, eyes blue or light gray. Wm. was enrolled in Des Moines in 1862 at Keokuk, Iowa. He served in Captain Hicks Infantry Co K 17th Iowa Infantry. Enlisted 24 March 1862 to serve 3 years. Born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, 5 foot 9, dark complexion, blue eyes, brown hair and was at time of enlistment an engineer. He was discharged at New Madrid , Mo. on March 29, 1862. The certificate of disability shows that Wm had been unfit for duty for 30 days because of a rupture. He was at this time stationed at Camp Clear Springs, Mississippi. The statement by Surgeon on 7 August 1862 states that there was an Inguinal hernia contracted before entering the service and that Wm. was not a fit subject for a pension. While on expedition in the state of Missouri with his said company and regiment, while on the march, loaded down with equipment, rations for a number of days and full supply of ammunition he was ruptured, and so badly ruptured that immediately on the return of his said regiment to Jefferson City he was sent to the camp or encampment hospital where he remained until discharged , that he has been afflicted therewith ever since, and much of the time entirely disabled, and none of the time able to do a full days work. His present physical condition is such that he is unable to do any work a portion of the time, much of the time he can only labor with the extremist physical suffering and much of the time can do no labor. Since leaving the service he has resided at Dodge, Nebraska with a nephew of his for some three years last past and is now living in Van Buren County, Iowa. His occupation has been that of a mill engineer but he is now unable to work at that, does whatever light work he can find to his hand, for support. This page was signed by Charles Dray as a witness. The address for his post office was Mt.Pleasant, Henry, Iowa. The military record was mixed with papers from a second William McCready and so I had to figure out which papers were his and which belonged to Uncle William. There was a note added saying, sorry mixed.
