Petty of Sulphur Springs Dies Last Night Obit.—William Augustus (“Gus”) Petty, 74, lifelong resident of Pine Bluff and former Jefferson county road overseer, died at 8 o’clock last night at his home in Sulphur Springs, following an illness of two years. He was born in Pine Bluff, on July 22, 1874, son of the late John S. and Jamie Mariah (Merritt) Petty, pioneer Arkansas residents. Mr. Petty received his education in the schools of Jefferson county and when a young man, entered the lumber business. For number of years he was associated with the Kendall Lumber Company and the Sawyer and Austin Lumber company. For 25 years, Mr. Petty served as road overseer for Jefferson county under the administration of the late Judge C. E. Philpot, Judge L. E. Cheek and Judge R. H. Williams. Seven years ago, he retired from active service and since that time had devoted his time to his farming interests. He was married here on February 14, 1896, to the former Miss Florence Luella Gentry of this city. Mr. Petty was a member of the Methodist church at Sulphur Springs and the White Sulphur Lodge No. 122, F. and A. M. of Sulphur Springs, of which he had served as a past master. He was awarded an honorary membership to the White Sulphur Lodge several years ago. Survivors include his wife, two sons, H. A. Petty of Sulphur Springs and J. S. Petty of this city; two daughters, Mrs. John Raymick of Sulphur Springs and Mrs. Jamie Mosley of Washington, D. C.; two brothers, Homer Petty of Winchester and Irvin Petty of Glendale, Calif.; twenty-two grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11 o’clock from the Methodist church at Sulphur Springs in charge of Rev. W. E. West, the pastor and the Rev. M. E. Scott, pastor of the Methodist church of Camden. Burial will be on the family lot in the Fitzhugh cemetery with graveside services in charge of the White Sulphur Lodge No. 122, F. and A. M. Arrangements are in charge of Ralph Robinson and Son mortuary. Active Pallbearers are: Joe Bailey, Thomas Watson, Robert May, Willie May, Bert Gailey, Laclede Fergusson. Honorary: Henry Williams, Sam Vauix, Sr., Ed Dupree, Sr., Garland Brewster, Sr., Claude Pledger, M. V. Mead, Judge W. C. Rountree, Dr. S. C. Monroe, Dr. C. B. Capel, S. E. Tidwell, Ben Watson, Will Watson, W. C. Carey, W. A. West, W. J. Raymick, Frank Price, Joe Williams, Thad Bailey, Tom Bailey, J. O. Lowman and Chester Woodfield.
