Description	:	Condensed from an obituary in the Springfield Union, 18 October 1947 William C. Skinner was born in Northampton June 12, 1857. He attended Williston Academy and was graduated from Yale University. His first connection with the Skinner Mills, established here by his father, William Skinner, in 1874, was in 1876. In 1883, William and his younger brother Joseph were taken into the business under the name of William Skinner & Sons, and the firm was incorporated in 1889. Read More	Condensed from an obituary in the Springfield Union, 18 October 1947 William C. Skinner was born in Northampton June 12, 1857. He attended Williston Academy and was graduated from Yale University. His first connection with the Skinner Mills, established here by his father, William Skinner, in 1874, was in 1876. In 1883, William and his younger brother Joseph were taken into the business under the name of William Skinner & Sons, and the firm was incorporated in 1889. When his father died in 1902, the son succeeded him as president, but continued to specialize in the merchandizing end of the business, working out of New York. Under his presidency, the firm withstood the stormy periods through which the textile industry was passing. With the advent of World War II and the impounding by the Government of all raw silks, the company devoted most of its productive capacity to the manufacture of fabrics, principally parachute cloth of silk and nylon. Mr. Skinner was on the board of the Silk Association of America for over 30 years. He was the first president of that body to act as a good-will ambassador to the Orient and his first visit to Japan was in 1909.
