Description	:	William Eli Gordy was born May 5, 1887, near Hitt, Missouri, and departed this life in a Kirksville Hospital on June 21, 1943. He was the fourth child in a family of six children. On June 25, 1922, he was united in marriage to Altha May Fowler of near Arbela, Missouri. To this union were born two children, Leta June and William Eli, Jr. He was devoted to his wife and children, they being his main concern during his last illness. Read More	William Eli Gordy was born May 5, 1887, near Hitt, Missouri, and departed this life in a Kirksville Hospital on June 21, 1943. He was the fourth child in a family of six children. On June 25, 1922, he was united in marriage to Altha May Fowler of near Arbela, Missouri. To this union were born two children, Leta June and William Eli, Jr. He was devoted to his wife and children, they being his main concern during his last illness. He never wanted to cause them anxiety or worry and would try to hide his sufferings behind a smile. He had been in failing health for several years. On the 8th day of February 1943, he was taken violently ill, and from this illness he never fully recovered. All the tender nursing of his Faithful wife and the kind ministrations of the skilled doctors and nurses in the good hospital were of no avail. The Great Physician above all others prescribed rest eternal and after the months of suffering which he bore so patiently at last he fell asleep. He was hopeful and cheerful to the very last, had a pleasant smile and cheerful word for everyone, "I'm coming home before very long and I'm going to be all right," he would say. He had a happy, joyous disposition which was never dimmed by the hardships and misfortunes which at times threatened to overwhelm him. How he will be missed! The many friends he made during his short journey through life will miss his cheerful voice. His oft repeated admonition, "Just call me Bill," has won him many friends in all stations of life. He leaves to mourn his death his wife and children, one brother T. A. Gordy of Ashton, a sister, Mrs. Dan Mason, of Granger, two uncles, J. M. Reed of Downing, and Jacob Gordy, of Stiles, Iowa. He was of the United Brethren faith. His was a religion of service to others. Not only was his religion manifested among his fellowman but even to the dumb creatures in his care. He was ever kind and gentle to all things and cruelty to animals smote him as a pain. He was ever interested in all things for civic betterment, and during his last days asked his wife to send him all the county papers so that he could keep up with the things back home. Truly, he will be missed by all who know him. We pluck the beautiful blossom, but it fades in our sheltering clasp; and the hand which we hold so fondly, slips forever from our grasp. Is Heaven made of the lovely things. That we love but can't keep here. If it is, near the throne 'mong the angels, is the one we called "Daddy Dear". Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. G. V. Baskett, officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. W. F. Shannon, and Florence Walton, with Mrs. Hubert Hohn, presiding at the piano. Pall bearers were Alva Sears, Willard Mohr, Bernard Wier, Archie Boyer, Leland Dannenhauer, and Leo Cole.
