William, misplaced in both the Hiatt and Harris books, lived in Back Creek, Frederick Co., VA, probably on property from his father-in-law Casper Rinker. He was the only known child of John's first wife Mary Smith. He is proven in part by a codicil in his father John's will in that he received an inheritance from his grandfather and the fact that he was definitely not William the son of Thomas which Harris claimed (that William is found in Mason Co., KY) and he is not William Pugh as Cora Hiatt claimed (very different kids). He is a good fit for John(3)'s son. William had many children, 10 by his first wife, Catherine and 5 by his 2nd wife Ann McCool, who was the disowned wife of John Lewis. Marriages are known for all 15 children; 100 grandchildren; 416 great-grandchildren. William was the feminine side of the three pairs of cousin marriages between the daughters of this William [Eleanor, Elizabeth and Catherine] and the three sons of William, Jr. [Absolom, John, and William ] who settled in Warren Co., OH on property divided between them from William, Jr. The only child of William's to stay in Virginia was his oldest daughter Mary and her Crisswells. In fact Mary was the only grandchild of John III to remain in Virginia, every one else went west. John Chenoweth Hampshire Co. VA. Will dated April 19th, 1811, proven Sept. 14th 1812. "To my son William a one tenth part and 50 dollars extraordinary in place of a legacy, left by his grandfather (not named)." This grandfather is thought to be the William Smith who left a verbal will to John(3). The bond on Smith's will was posted by Levi Ashbrook and Joseph Bean.
