In 1900, he was living at home in Upton Township, Texas County, Missouri, farming with the family. June 1887, MO The United States entered World War I, and on September 12, 1918, this blue-eyed, brown-haired man walked into the draft office in Shelby County, Iowa. William was now 41 years old, single, living in Harlan, Iowa, and working as a bridge carpenter for the Western division of the Chicago Great Western Railway. He told the clerk that he was born in Richland, Pulaski County, Missouri. His nearest relative was his brother Frank, who lived in Embree, Missouri. The clerk noted that William was of medium build and height and had no noticeable scars or other marks. In the railroading town of Missouri Valley, Iowa, he met and fell in love with Mamie "Minnie" Cole. He was 45 when he was first married, and while he welcomed Mamie's children, he did not have any known children of his own. At the time of the 1930 US Census, he and Mamie were living at 1701 Council Bluffs, Iowa. The 1930 US Census lists: William Detweiler, 53, head, bridge carpenter for railroad, b. MO Mamie Detweiler, 49, wife, b. IL Florence Lewis, 18, step-daughter, married, b. IA Mamie had several children by a previous husband, and some had died in years past.
