Phillips, 90 years old, veteran of the Civil war, died this morning, at 2 o'clock at the home of his son, Jesse Phillips, eight miles west of this city. Death was due to a complication of diseases, and followed a long illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at the home. Burial will be in Brownsburg, Ind. Mr. Phillips had lived in this county for many years and was well known. He was born Jan. 27, 1839, in Jefferson county, the son of Thomas and Susan, Oct. 12, 1890, he was married to Miss Alice Wright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Wright, and for a time they lived in Hendricks county before coming here. When the call for volunteers for service in the Civil war came in 1861, he was one of the first to answer. He enlisted at North Vernon and served for twelve months with Company K. first Indiana infantry. IN MANY BATTLES He was sent to Harpers Ferry and later to Washington D.C. He was in the engagement at Bull Run, at Fredericksburg and Richmond Va. At the latter place he was discharged, but re-enlisted at Indianapolis and served with Company L, second cavalry, 42nd Indiana volunteers. Mr. Phillips was in some of the largest battles of the war, including that of Lookout mountain, where he would have been captured had he not been rescued by the 37th Indiana infantry in front of Sherman on his march to the sea. At Selma, Ala. he was wounded in battle, but not seriously so, he returned to his home after the war and again engaged in farming, although his health was impaired. Mr. Phillips was a member of the Methodist church, having affiliated with that denomination while a resident of Hendricks county. He was a highly esteemed man and liked by all who knew him. He had been ill for several years, but his condition became much worse Sunday, since which time death had been expected. Surviving are two sons, Jesse, with whom he lived, and Paul Phillips, of Dayton, O. A daughter, Julia, passed away several years ago. There are also two grandchildren, Miss Margaret Phillips and Miss Irma Ogden. NEXT DAY IN THE SAME NEWSPAPER Friday November 8, 1929 PHILLIPS RITES HERE TOMORROW Funeral services for Alexander W. Phillips, 90 years old, who died at the home of his son Jesse Phillips, west of the city, will be held at the home tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock conducted by the Rev. W.H. Washburn, of Ogilville. The body will be taken to Brownsburg, near Indianapolis, for burial.
