Smiley, at Bentonville Sunday afternoon at half past three o'clock the message came for Mrs. Alpha Smiley to come up higher and the gentle spirit of this good woman was wafted back from whence it came seventy-seven years ago. She had been ill for several months past, gradually growing weaker with each succeeding day, until Thursday she began sinking rapidly and it was seen that the end was near. The machinery of the human body had simply run its course – its work was done. The remains were brought to Springdale on the 12:54 train Monday and funeral services were held at the Primitive Baptist Church at 1:30, conducted by Rev. W.F. Rogers, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. The remains were interred in Bluff cemetery by the side of the husband of the deceased, Wm. Smiley who died September 19, 1907. Alpha Holcomb was born in Indiana April 7, 1833, being a daughter of John and Dorothy Holcomb. At an early age she came with her parents to Arkansas, her father being one of the early settlers in this vicinity. He was a Primitive Baptist minister and was one of the founders of Shiloh Baptist Church and was for many years its pastor and main support. In the early days Springdale was known as Shiloh, taking its name from the church. Eld. John Holcomb was a man of considerable means for those days, owning a large portion of the land on which the town of Springdale now stands. His residence stood just north of the S.N. Haxton property known as the sanitarium, and in addition to his large agricultural interest he conducted a wagon factory and other enterprises. In addition to his retainers he had a family of sixteen children, eight sons and eight daughters, and of the family only five are now living: Silas Holcomb, who resides in Texas; John H. Holcomb, who is now in Oklahoma where he is making his home with a daughter; Mrs. Dollie Bynum, residing near Tahlequah, Ok.; Mrs. Martha Bynum, who has been making her home in this section for some time past and Mrs. Ellen Walden of Ozark. Mrs. Martha Bynum was with her sister when the end came and Mrs. Waldon arrived soon after, both being present at the funeral. In September 1860 the subject of this sketch made a profession of religion and joined the Primitive Baptist Church, being baptized by her father. She remained faithful and devoted member of this church to the end. On December 11, 1853 she was united in marriage to William Matthew Smiley, who was in the employ of her father. To them were born five children, three sons and two daughters: Joe, who resides out near Thornberry; Dorothy, wife of Tobe Stearns, residing near Fayetteville; Tabitha, wife of George Harris, residing at Cave Springs; James Barnett, who died at Grosbeck Texas July 25, 1892; Dr. J.L., who resides at Bentonville. All the living children were present when their mother passed away. After the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Smiley they continued to make their home with the latter's parents until February 1856 when they moved onto a tract of land which is now located in the northwest part of town and was formerly part of the Zimmerman estate. They resided here until February 1882 when they sold out and purchased a farm out on Osage, two miles north of Elm Springs. On the death of her husband in 1907 their son, Joe Smiley and family, took charge of the old home place to care for his mother and look after the property. This property was sold a few months ago and Mrs. Smiley recently went to the home of her son at Bentonville to reside. There is much that could be said of this good woman, who as a daughter, wife and mother discharged every duty faithfully and well. No family was ever blessed with a more devoted mother and no husband ever had a more loyal or self-sacrificing helper to encourage him in the battles of life.
