Stephen's descendants eventually settled in Maine. Captain Smith Hopkins (1792-1860) was born in Bar Harbor, Maine - his grave is at Evergreen Cemetery, North Searsport. He served briefly in the War of 1812 and in 1814, at Prospect, Maine, he married Susannah Dwelley. Among their children was a daughter, Artemisia. The spelling of her name varies from record to record and is sometimes spelled "Artemisa," "Artemisia," or even "Artemina." She was born on May 13, 1840, in Bangor, Maine. Because the public records for this period were lost in a fire, we have severe limitations in verifying information about her. At some point, the Hopkins family moved to Frankfort. At the age of 15, Artemisia, along with many of Frankfort's other citizens, went down to the port to see the docking of a French ship. On board was her future husband, Eugene Augustus (E.A.) Duval. Although we know little of the beginnings of their relationship, we do know that it began to flourish as Artemisia guided him in his efforts to learn how English. They were married that year. While living in Frankfort, they couple welcomed their first four children. Charles F. died in infancy. Charles S., named for the infant who died, followed. Caroline Belle was born in 1861 and Eugene Winton, my great-great-grandfather, was born on December 27, 1865. After the birth of Eugene Winton, the family came to California by ship through the Isthmus of Panama, now the Panama Canal. Shortly after, they moved to Virginia City, Nevada, but it was quickly decided that the environment there was not conducive to raising their growing family. By 1868, they had moved back to California, this time to Saticoy. They bough 75 acres of land at $12-$25 per acre and set out growing apricots, peaches, plums, pears, citrus, and walnuts. Artemisia helped at the Starr House, a stage coach stop where the family stayed during the construction of their house. While there, a daughter, Gertrude, was born in 1869. A daughter, Anna, would be born in 1871, followed by a brother, William (Willie) in 1872. Walter Hopkins was born in 1875, and he would later become president of the Bank of Ventura AND a state senator. Ernest was born in 1877, and Edwin in 1879. Artemisia died in Ventura, California in 1909, nearly two years after the death of her husband in April 1907. They are buried together at Santa Paula Cemetery.
