Description	:	Eugene Winton was born on December 27, 1865 in Frankfort, Maine. He was the fourth child (third surviving) of Eugene Augustus Duval and Artemisia Hopkins Duval, who were married in 1855. He was the fourth child (third surviving) of Eugene Augustus Duval and Artemisia Hopkins Duval, who were married in 1855. Following the birth of Eugene Winton, or "Winn," the family left Maine and came by ship through the Isthmus of Panama, now the Panama Canal, to California. They then settled in Virginia City, but it was quickly decided that the atmosphere there was "too rough" for a growing family, and they returned to California, where they settled in Saticoy. There, Eugene Augustus and Artemisia would have six more children, one of whom would grow up to become a California state senator. On February 26, 1889, he married Katherine DeTroy in Ventura, California, the daughter of George DeTroy and Katharine Zahn. "Kate" was born in August of 1864 in Trenton, Illinois and the two remained married until her death on August 30, 1943. Upon his death less than a year later, they were buried together in Santa Paula Cemetery in Ventura County. Winn and Kate had two children. Their daughter, Zelta Georgie Duval, was born on August 26, 1895 in Ventura, California. She died on January 18, 1974 in Santa Barbara. They welcomed a son, my great-grandfather, on February 23, 1901, also in Ventura. He died on June 27, 1946. The following is an excerpt from a newspaper announcing the birth of their son: "Winn Duval is a happy man this week. His bright smile and joyous actions show it plainly. But he has reason sufficient for his happiness. A bouncing baby boy came tot he Duval home Sunday morning." Winn owned a hardware store, called Duval and DeTroy, with Katherine's brother in Ventura, California. It was open for many successful years and my grandmother recalls many fond memories of visiting Grandfather Winn's store in her childhood. Obituary: "E.W. Duval, Pioneer County Resident, Dies" E.W. Duval, 78, a member of one of Ventura county's pioneering families died yesterday at a Santa Barbara hospital, following a long illness. Mr. Duval, who formerly owned the Duval Hardware Store in Ventura, had operated a citrus ranch near Camarillo for the past 25 years. He came to Ventura from Maine in 1868 with his parents, who engaged in ranching near Saticoy. Funeral services will be conduced from the Skillin mortuary, Santa Paula, Friday at 3 p.m., followed by interment at Santa Paula Cemetery. Survivors include a son, L.D. Duval, Camarillo; a daughter, Mrs. J.D. Hill, Santa Barbara; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Willis, Ventura and Mrs. Gertrude Wright, Saticoy, and two brothers, Walter H. Duval, Santa Paula, and Ed S. Duval, Saticoy.
