Description	:	Eugene Augustus Duval was born on September 14, 1834, to Charles Jean Baptiste Duval of Saint Pierre d'Allonne, France and Jeanne Elizabeth DuBois of Grand Bourg, Marie Galante, Guadeloupe. His father was in the shipping business. In tracing back to my great-great-great grandfather's time, we found that he had been one of three children. He had a sister, Marie Euphrosine (b. circa 1836) and a brother Charles (b. circa 1833). Eugene was born on Pointe a Pitre, on the island of Guadeloupe, in the French West Indies. Another recollection has it that he was born on the island of Marie Galante. When very young, the family moved to Martinique. There is an old family story Eugene Augustus told his children about how he came to be a sea captain. When he was 12 years old and still living at home on Martinique, he came home from school for lunch one day. As he was sitting in the window, an earthquake, followed by a tsunami occurred, perhaps as the result of a volcanic eruption. He and his siblings escaped to the countryside with their mother, but their father perished. In the difficult aftermath, the only water they were able to find was the small amount left in animal or wagon tracks in the mud. The French government put orphaned or half-orphaned boys in the merchant marines as cabin boys. It was a hard life for little boys. He told of learning to hum in his sleep to keep from being punished by the rod for sleeping at his post. As a young man, he was the First Mate on a coastal vessel plying the Caribbean and East Coast. When it docked on the coast of Maine, the people of Frankfort went down to the port to see the French ship, his future bride, Artemisia Hopkins, among them. Although we do not know more than this about the beginnings of their friendship, we do know that at the time, Eugene Augustus was teaching himself English with a primer and was helped in his studies by fifteen year old Artemisia. So their romance began. Eugene Augustus and Artemisia were married in 1855. Four children, Charles F. (who died in infancy), Charles S., Caroline Belle and Eugene Winton, my great-great grandfather, were born in Frankfort, Maine. The family came by ship through the Isthmus of Panama, now the Panama Canal. In 1861, Eugene Augustus came to California, then to Virginia City, Nevada, but Eugene Augustus felt it was too rough an atmosphere to raise his family. In 1868, they came to Saticoy, California, where they bought 75 acres of land and set out apricots, peaches, plums, pears, citrus and walnuts. Artemisia helped at the Starr House, a stage couch stop where they stayed while their house was being built. Their daughter, Gertrude, was born there. Six more children were born to this union after Gertrude: Anna, William (Willie), Walter Hopkins (who would later become the president of the Bank of Ventura AND a California State Senator), Ernest and Edwin. In addition to being a rancher, Eugene Augustus owned a mercantile store and, according to the August 1873 Signal, we learn that he was also the postmaster of a newly-established Post Office. Additionally, he was Secretary of Farmers Canal and Water Company, a member of Saticoy Regulators or "blue feathers" - to prevent horse stealing. Eugene Augustus died on April 17, 1907 at the age of 72. He is buried with his wife, Artemisia, who died about two weeks shy of the two-year anniversary of her husband's death. They are interred together at Santa Paula Cemetery in Ventura County, California.
