He was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on January 18, 1876. Arthur farmed near Percival and Persia, Iowa, and later became a building contractor. He moved to Modale, Iowa in 1919 and remained there the rest of his life. He married Edna Fensler and they had three daughters and one son. Edna was born on June 12, 1882. One of the daughters was Blanche Cornelia, born on March 9, 1907. Blanche worked in a general store for many years to help support the family after her mother was killed as a result of injuries received when the car she was riding in was hit by a train in very thick fog. Edna died on November 30, 1920. Arthur married on January 27, 1926, to Nettie Cutler Bourn. Arthur died on December 18, 1952, and Nettie died on August 5, 1965." Visionary, faithful and fearless both his mother's and father's families immigrated from other lands to join what they believed would be God's Kingdom on earth. Arthur's mother, Elisabeth Bassett, immigrated with her family from Wales at the tender age of 6. The family left Liverpool, England on April 19, 1856 and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on 23 May 1856. The ship they share with the rest of their immigrating Latter-Day Saint brothers and sisters was the Samuel Curling. She was only 9 years old by the time the family joined 353 individuals and 59 wagons in the James S. Brown Handcart Company when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Florence, Nebraska (now Omaha). She must have been a tough little girl, for having survived the ocean crossing, she then walked across the American West while her parents pulled a handcart filled with their earthly possessions and goods needed to survive. The vision for the trek was to join the kingdom of God found in Salt Lake City, Utah. Whatever it was that dimmed that passion, the family left both the church and Utah and return to Council Bluffs, Iowa. There they joined a Mormon group who rejected the leadership of Brigham Young- the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (today called the Community of Christ). Arthur's mother married Frederick Hansen who had a similar background. His family had immigrated with the Latter-Day Saints from Denmark and had also pulled their handcart across the Great American West. They, too, left the Utah movement and, returning to Council Bluffs, joined the Reorganization. Iowa was where Arthur was raised and where he and Edna raised their own children. SOURCES: 1.
