Biographical Sketch submitted by Marcia Jane (Stephens) Kelley "Bert was raised on a farm in Quitman, Missouri. He served in the Missouri National Guard from February 20, 1925 to January 19, 1932. Later he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps from December 20, 1935 thru June 14, 1937. He was drafted into the U.S. Army at Ft. Lewis, Washington on May 5, 1942 and was discharged December 19, 1945 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. His overseas tour started from Ft. Ord, California. The first stop was the landing on Kiska in the Aleutian Islands on May 11, 1943. He made Private First Class and was a forward observer in the 48th Field Artillery Battalion. Later he was in action on Leyte and Luzon in the Philippines, Okinawa and several other Pacific islands. Kelley, 56, 3007 Gress St., died Wednesday at a local hospital after a short illness. "Born at Quitman, Mo., he was a resident of Council Bluffs for 20 years. "Mr. Kelley was employed 11 years at the Veteran's Hospital in Omaha. In April, 1962, he began working for himself as a roofer. "He was a member of Southside Christian Church and was a veteran of Worl War II. "Survivors include: Widow, Marcia; two sons, Franklin and Albert, both at home; seven daughters, Mrs. Betty Lee of Council Bluffs; Jennie, Meloria, Alicia, Marcia Elaine, Cindy and Cristina, all at home. "Mother, Mrs. Clara Kelley of Burlington Junction, Mo.; five sisters, Mrs. Elva Shiply of Burlington Junction, Mrs. Gene Eggleston of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Harry Purcell of Grand Island, Neb., Mrs. Herman Tiemeyer of Rockport, Mo., and Mrs. L.D.
