Description	:	Betty Jean (Hicks) Coffey, age 79, passed away Sunday, December 12, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. Jean was born at home in Nettleton, Mo., on August 24, 1931, to Russel and Mary Ann (Davis) Hicks. She graduated from Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Mo., in 1948, and from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1952. She taught home economics at Glenwood High School, and in 1954, she married Roger Coffey of Garden Grove, Iowa. Jean was born at home in Nettleton, Mo., on August 24, 1931, to Russel and Mary Ann (Davis) Hicks. She graduated from Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Mo., in 1948, and from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1952. She taught home economics at Glenwood High School, and in 1954, she married Roger Coffey of Garden Grove, Iowa. The Coffey's made their home in Council Bluffs and had been married for 56 years at the time of her death. She taught home economics and science at Roosevelt Junior High in Council Bluffs, and she was later a longtime substitute teacher in the Council Bluffs Community School District while her four children were young. In 1974, Jean began teaching home economics full-time at Abraham Lincoln High School. She later taught science at Wilson Junior High. She obtained her Masters of Science Degree in Vocational Education from Iowa State University and retired from teaching in 1996. She continued working in retirement as a hostess at U.S.A. Steak Buffet until 2004. Jean was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church for 56 years. She was also a Bethel Guardian of Bethel #1, International Order of Job's Daughters, having served in that position for 15 years. She also served as a Supreme Deputy for Iowa Job's Daughters. Jean was a member of Council Bluffs Chapter 441 Order of the Eastern Star where she was serving as Secretary at the time of her death. She was also a Board Member of the New Masonic Temple Association. Jean contributed many long hours and much hard work to these organizations. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Barbara Beecher, of Yuma, Ariz., and Charlene Santee, of Kansas City, Mo. Survivors include her husband, Roger; daughters, Ann (John) Brus, of Denison, Iowa, Claudia (John) Hauser, of Council Bluffs, and Debra (Rene) Holsapple, of Marshalltown, Iowa; son, David (Janice) Coffey, of Council Bluffs; sisters, Annetta Lee Stone, of Windsor, Mo., Marilyn (John) Crass, of Versailles, Mo., and Margaret Skidmore, of Harrisonville, Mo.; brother, Ralph (Sherry) Hicks, of Kansas City, Mo.; granddaughters, Lisa Hauser, Laura Hauser, and Kayley Coffey, of Council Bluffs, and Jeana Holsapple, of Marshalltown, Iowa; grandsons, Erich (Kelli) Brus, of Urbandale, Iowa, Matthew Brus, of Ames, Iowa, Thomas Hauser, of LaVista, Neb., David Brus, of Waukee, Iowa, and Michael Holsapple and Joel Brus, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and great-granddaughter, Elia Brus, of Urbandale, Iowa. An Eastern Star service will be conducted by Council Bluffs Chapter 441 Order of the Eastern Star at 6 p.m., Wednesday, at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel, with visitation following until 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, December 16, 2010, at Broadway United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris St. Clair officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
