Description	:	Note: the headstone inscription for Carl Harris Fischer was engraved in error with a DOD year of 1918. He actually died on February 24, 1919 in Porterville, California. Evergreen cemetery records confirm that the burial plot was bought in late February 1919, and that he was buried on March 3, 1919. Headstone inscription errors are not uncommon - once the inscription was engraved, even in error, fixing it may not have been financially feasible by either the engraver or the family. Both obituaries for Carl were found in microfilmed issues of the Fairfield Journal at the Fairfield Public Library, and both are clearly printed in February/March of 1919. The Spanish Influenza epidemic of 1918/1919 claimed many lives in the United States. The onset of symptoms leading to death often was measured in hours or a very few days - the deaths were, in many cases, very unexpected and shocked many surviving family members and friends. ---------------- Fairfield Journal March 4, 1919 Pg. 3 Col. 3 Life of C. H. Fisher (sic) C. H. Fisher (sic. Fischer) whose body was buried here had spent the winter in this vicinity and died the day following his arrival in California. Carl Harris Fisher (sic) was born in Muscatine county, Iowa, Sepptember 27th, 1892 and died in a hospital at Porterville, Califonia, February 24th, 1919,, aged 26 years 4 month (sic) and 27 days. He came, with his parents, to this city when about eighteen months old, and spent his entire life here until five years ago when he moved to Portersville (sic. Porterville), California. He was married to Lucille Anderson, March 7th, 1915 at Portersville, California (sic) to which union there was born two daughters, Doris Alice aged 3 years and Thelma Lucille, aged 2 years. Aside from wife and two daughters he leaves his father, L. L. Fisher (sic), his mother and one sister, La Rue (sic), and one brother, Robert. He had been a member of the Methodist Episcol (sic) church since childhood. He was a kind and loving husband and father and leaves many friends here as in California. ------------- Note: the following transcription is from the original microfilmed image. This particular item inadvertently spelled the death location as "Pottersville, California" instead of the correct "Porterville, California" location. Fairfield Journal February 25, 1919 Pg. 2 Col. 1 CARL FISCHER DIED IN HOSPITAL AT POTTERSVILLE, CALIFORNIA L. L Fischer, residing north of the city received a message this morning telling of the death of his son Carl Fischer which occurred at the hospital at Pottersville, California. His death was due to influenza and comes as a great shock to his family and other relatives and friends. Mr. Fischer in company with his wife and two little daughters left Fairfield a week ago Monday for their home in Pottersville after having spent several months with relatives here. He was taken ill on Saturday. Mrs. Fischer is also ill at the hospital with the same disease. Mr. Fischer was about thirty years of age and is survived by his wife who was formerly Miss Lucille Anderson and two little daughters. The remains will be shipped to this city for burial. No arrangements will be made for the funeral until the arrival of the remains.
