HAMMERS BELOVED PIONEER RESIDENT O THIS COMMUNITY PASSES AWAY SUDDENLY SUNDAY AFTERNOON Mrs. Carrie Hammers, one of the last pioneer residents in the community passed away at her home. She had been in her usual health until the last came. She suffered a hard fall which caused a complication that resulted in a blood clot that went suddenly to her heart at about 3 o'clock Sunday as she was at her home with her family. Death came instantly and apparently without pain. Fortunately both daughters, who are away together this year, had come home the last of the week and was with her during her last hours at the close, and it was as she would have wished to have her family with her at the end. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Methodist Church in Malvern conducted by Rev. Walter Plank, with burial in the Malvern Cemetery. Mrs. Hammers was in many ways a most remarkable woman. She was of strong convictions and high ideals and had a personality that impressed itself upon all who knew her. Her kindly ways and and neighborly offers has endeared her to a host of people who will most sadly miss her. She was a good woman. Carried A. Buffington was born in Mills county, Iowa on a farm near Mineola on June 12, 1862 and died March 4, 1923 at her home aged 60 years and 8 months, and 20 days. The greater part of her girlhood was spent i Red Oak and Malvern where she graduated from the public school in the class of 1883. While there the she became affiliated with the PI Beta Phil Sorority. On completing the course at the end of three years, she became one of the county's most successful teacher. In 1931 she was united in marriage to Oliver Hammers of Glenwood. At this time they moved to their farm near Malvern which was her home at the time of her death. To them were born three children, Amy, Marion, and James, who with the husband, husband, aged mother, and one sister, Mrs. R. O. Jackson survive her. The father, three brothers and a sister having gone before. She lived for her home and her children. Hr great aim in life was to be the best possible mother for she felt that to be a good mother was the greatest privilege given to a woman. She was ever a devoted Christian woman, having united with the Methodist tEpiscopal Church in her early girlhood. Although it was not always possible for her to attend services, her faith was that, that comes from kindly services and meditation, serving beauty and God's will in al things. Always having been a great reader, she was familiar with the best literature. She ever kept herselt abreast with the times on current topics. Mrs. Hammer had enjoyed the best of health all winter and was looking forward to the coming of spring with great anticipation but her life was cut short by a blood clot in the heart coming from a bruise received by a fall. Life is not measured by the span of years but by the deeds that one does, so her life has been one that was lived to the fullest measure. She endeared herself to her neighbors and left only kindly memories with all who knew her. The home has lost a faithful keeper, her husband and family a wise and loving counselor and a host of friends mourn with the sorrowing family in their day of woe.
