Both the Hammers and the Buffington were pioneer families in Mills County. Marion was educated in the country school and in Malvern High School. She graduated in 1917. She then attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, from which she graduated in 1922. Marion was united in... Read More	FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MARION HAMMERS, MAY 6 Francis Marion Hammers Smith Kemp was born March 30, 1899 to Oliver and Carrie Buffington Hammers in Malvern, Iowa. Both the Hammers and the Buffington were pioneer families in Mills County. Marion was educated in the country school and in Malvern High School. She graduated in 1917. She then attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, from which she graduated in 1922. Marion taught school in Belmond, Bussey, Malvern, Hastings, Randolph, Liberty, Pierson, and Magnolia, Iowa, and in Thurston, Nebraska retiring in 1961. In 1967 she moved back to Malvern. Marion was united in marriage to Claude W. Smith on August 14, 1927. To this union one son was born. On July 6, 1933, she was united in marriage to Harry Kemp. To this union, one son was born. After an extended illness, Marion died on May 3, 1982 at the Glen Haven Nursing Home in Glenwood, Iowa, having attained the age of 83 years. Marion was preceded in death by her parents, by her husbands, by a sister and by a brother. She is survived by her sons, Volney Hammers Smith and Joe Francis Kemp and by six grandchildren. Final rites were held at the Mansfield Funeral Home, Malvern, Thursday, May 6, the Rev. Charles E. Cowell Jr., officiant. Pall bearers were Dan Kemp, Mark Kemp, Tim Shaw, Paul A. Smith, Neal Smith, and Wayne Cyboron. At the registry book was Mr.s C. J. Noffsinger. Music was by Mrs. W. G. Blackburn, organist and Neil McPherron, soloist. Selections were, "Beyond The Sunset" and "How Great Thou Art." Interment was in the Malvern cemetery, Karl M. Hertz, director in charge. Malvern Leader, Malvern, Iowa, Thursday, May 13, 1982, page 4 Frances married Claude Wallace Smith on August 17, 1927 in Ames, Iowa. They are the parents of one son, Volney. They divorced. Frances married Harry Kemp on July 6, 1933 in Rock Port, Missouri. They are the parents of one son, Jon.
